LIMA, February 1st.— Trade union organizations affiliated with the General Confederation of Trade Unions of Peru (CGTP) have condemned the criminalization of social protest and social organizations fighting in the demonstrations against President-elect Dina Boluarte, Telesur reported.
The CGTP, the largest union in Peru, said more than 60 Peruvians have already lost their lives due to criminal repression, particularly in the southern regions, while the government prepares to militarize those regions.
The CGTP, together with other social organizations, unions and organized indigenous communities, held a national day of protest on Tuesday 31 January and in the case of Lima, the protesters gathered in Plaza Dos de Mayo.
A message released during the aforementioned national day of protest by the National Assembly of Peoples, to which the workers’ union is affiliated, notes that the crisis was caused by what it describes as the dictatorship of civil society, the military and the economy of Boluarte and its Prime Minister Alberto Otárola.
He specified that this government “has the consent of the oligopolistic oligarchy and of the media power that normalizes the killings” in relation to the deaths, mainly civilians, shot during the protests that began last December.
The text criticized the President for not taking responsibility for the deaths and her role in the crisis, while opposing popular calls for a referendum to convene a Constituent Assembly.
This, he added, is an insult to the intelligentsia of citizens who are demanding the resignation of Boluarte and Otárola “so that they may be brought to justice and held accountable for their crimes against humanity”.
According to the CGTP, in order to achieve the impeachment of the President, it is very important “to articulate the popular and trade union movement and to unite in action all democratic forces against the dictatorship”.
The union group also called for the restoration of democratic freedoms, reiterating its condemnation of the murders of the brothers and the persecution of social organizations and their leaders.
At the same time, another national day of struggle was proclaimed for February 9th, as was carried out on Tuesday 31st.
