Tegucigalpa, March 28 (Prensa Latina) Diplomatic relations between Honduras and China today represent a sovereign and self-determined decision that fills us with joy, political scientist Alejandro Bonilla said here.
The Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party member pointed out that the government, led by President Xiomara Castro, had taught this Central American nation a lesson in sovereignty by establishing these ties.
“Honduras is instructed by this principle to know which country it trades with or has diplomatic relations with, without there being any criteria from the empires,” he said.
In a telephone conversation with Presa Latina, Bonilla referred to the Honduran executive’s severing of ties with the island of Taiwan and recognition of the principle of one China.
He explained that this decision comes at a time of an emerging multipolar world that is challenging the US empire, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and their various hegemonic control matrices.
“Honduras could have established political ties with China at any point in history, but in my opinion there is no more important point in time than now,” he stressed.
The analyst alluded to this new chapter, which begins with the Asian giant placing Honduras on a geopolitical strategic plane and demonstrating a position in a multipolar world that also represents Russia.
He also mentioned the Asian giant’s economic development and how its friendship and cooperative ties are gaining strength in the countries of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, where various infrastructure, telecommunications and other projects are being implemented.
He stressed that after Castro’s announcement that it would begin efforts to establish official relations with China, the United States launched its attacks, despite saying it viewed the Honduran decision as a sovereign matter.
“First, some Libre fighters canceled their visas, accusing them of corruption. In addition, there is a media campaign orchestrated by the White House and US Ambassador to Honduras Laura Dogu, who is employing the same plan used in Nicaragua to destabilize the government,” he denounced.
In this sense, he said that the hegemonic media in the land of the pines daily attacked the government of Honduras’ first female president through organizations linked to Washington and the reactionary Honduran right.
Last weekend, Tegucigalpa and Beijing agreed to build friendly relations between the two countries based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence, and non-aggression and interference in their internal affairs.
The Chinese executive on Monday said there was no requirement for diplomatic ties to be established, adding that it appreciated President Xiomara Castro’s decision.
In doing so, Honduras becomes the ninth Central American country and the fifth Latin American country to have broken with the island of Taiwan to establish ties with China since 2016.
