Bruno Luperi once again changed the original text of his grandfather Benedito Ruy Barbosa to adapt the story of Renascer to current times. Unlike 1993, Globo's nine o'clock soap opera didn't comically dwell on the “dead name” the registered name or other former nickname of a trans person of Buba (Gabriela Medeiros).
In the first version, Buba (Maria Luisa Mendonça) burst into laughter when she revealed her name in the register to José Venâncio, then played by Taumaturgo Ferreira. The remake had already driven an important change in the character's profile, moving from an intersex to a trans woman.
Unlike three decades ago, there is now an understanding that calling a transgender person by the name of their deceased is violence. Buba from 2023, for example, made it clear to Venâncio (Rodrigo Simas) that she should only be called Isabela.
“I feel like I'm an open book while you're a box of surprises,” the publicist complained. “I don’t even know your name,” he added.
“My name is Isabella,” added the character Gabriela Medeiros. “His real name,” insisted José Inocêncio’s son (Marcos Palmeira). “It doesn’t have a real name,” the psychologist continued.
“Before, your name from before,” Eriberto’s partner (Pedro Neschling) continued. “It doesn’t exist,” she replied, irritated by Venâncio’s insistence.
“For me it exists. I don't know who your parents are, I don't know anything. “I’m tired of always depriving myself, walking on eggshells and not knowing what I’m going to say wrong,” he said.
“I will not experience this pain again. Creating intimacy doesn’t require bringing the ghosts of my past to light,” Buba added, going further:
It's different because you were never a freak for your family. It's different because your “daddy” called to tell you what's yours. Mine kicked me out when I was 16 to pretend I didn't exist. Intimacy means looking deep into your eyes and saying: I love you. Now it's too cruel to look into my past.
Renascer was written and created by author Benedito Ruy Barbosa. The first version was broadcast on Globo in 1993. Bruno Luperi is the writer's grandson and is responsible for the adaptation of the rural saga, which premiered in prime time in January. The remake will air until September.
