While some parts of Quebec are still enjoying the green carpet of fall, the north coast has already received enough snow to build much more than just a simple snowman. Details.

Much more than usual

With a total of 30 centimeters of snow on the ground, Sept-Îles is the snowiest city in Canada among major cities. This is not normal: this thick carpet is far above average. As a guide, only four centimeters of snow is expected to cover this Côte-Nord community that day.

SNOW1 (2)

At the time of writing, only the northern areas of the province are covered with persistent snow accumulation on the ground. Because temperatures remained relatively cold compared to regions further south, the mat was unable to melt completely.

SNOW2 (1)

The cities of Saguenay and Val-d’Or are also among the cities with more snow than normal, with around fifteen and twenty centimeters of snow respectively.

And it’s not over yet

The coming days bring good news if you like snow. A low pressure area will move through Abitibi on the night of Sunday to Monday, bringing moderate amounts of snow, particularly in the western sectors of the province.

SNOW3 (1)

Haute-Gatineau, Hautes-Laurentides and Abitibi are expected to receive between 5 and 10 centimeters by Tuesday.

Elsewhere, a far more formidable system should be watched closely: A large low-pressure system is tracking across the Atlantic along the American coast and could drop snow in areas of eastern Quebec next weekend.
