Reopening of the National Museum of Mayan Art in Guatemala

From 2020 to date, the current executive branch has invested 187 million quetzales (almost $24 million) in heritage restoration and promotion projects, said that nation’s president, Alejandro Giammattei.

At the ceremonial reopening of the work, he emphasized how important it is to give art and culture the place they deserve.

“May the next generations spread this heritage,” urged the President, together with the Minister of the sector, Felipe Aguilar.

Giammattei highlighted the legacy of the museum’s former director Daniel Aquino, who died last year, and whose name the conference room will bear.

The head of state thanked this personality for his commitment “even in his last days”. “A man who dreamed of his transformation,” he emphasized.

“This cultural site is a space that shows us as a spectacular country,” explained the head of culture and sport.

The National Museum of Mayan Art houses iconic pieces from the pre-Hispanic period and the post-conquest merger of Spain, treasures more than three thousand years old.

It has 4,200 square meters of exhibition space and 2,000 square meters is dedicated to the restoration and research of the objects that make up the diverse selection.

It houses 35,000 archaeological and 15,000 ethnological objects, complemented by a small collection of sculptures, paintings, replicas, architectural models, dioramas and stage sets.

Among them are pieces of obsidian from the Guatemalan highlands with depictions of deities and celestial symbols among moons, stars and constellations.
