Romania appoints Austrian ambassador after Schengen veto

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest made it clear that this gesture by Austria would have “inevitable consequences” for bilateral relations.

Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu summoned the Austrian ambassador to Bucharest, Adelheid Folie, on Thursday night to hand her a note of protest from the Romanian government over Austria’s “unjustified and hostile attitude” towards Romania’s accession to Schengen.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest made it clear that this gesture by Austria would have “inevitable consequences” for bilateral relations. A protest was also lodged with the Austrian diplomat over recent allegations by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer that Romanian authorities put pressure on Austrian companies operating in Romania in view of the country’s planned entry into the borderless Schengen area. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest, such statements are “simply unacceptable” because they do not correspond to reality.
