Russia responded to a comment by US President Joe Biden in which he called support for Ukraine and Israel an “investment”. This Friday (20), a spokeswoman for the Russian government said that Biden’s speech shows that Washington benefits from “proxy wars” instead of “battles for ideas”.

Biden’s comments were made during a speech on Thursday (19) in which the US President announced his intention to approve an aid package for Ukraine and Israel.

Addressing Americans, the Democrat said the support of the two US allies was “a wise investment that will pay dividends for American security for generations” and sought to rally support for new aid packages.

Biden also compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to Hamas, saying both want to “destroy democracies in neighboring countries.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on Biden’s statement on a social network with reference to American “cynicism.”

“They used to call it the ‘fight for freedom and democracy,'” she said.

“Now it turns out that these are just calculations. It’s always been that way, they’ve just fooled the world using values that Washington has never defended.”

Zakharova even used a wellknown phrase from the film “The Godfather” to refer to the U.S. position in foreign conflicts: “Nothing personal, just business.”

“Wars have traditionally been ‘smart investments’ for the United States because they have not taken place on American soil and they do not care about the costs borne by others,” Zakharova said.
