The United States said Thursday it had information that Russia wanted to buy two dozen different weapons from North Korea to use in the war in Ukraine, in exchange for offering food.
“We have information that Russia is actively trying to acquire new ammunition,” John Kirby, a White House spokesman, said at a telephone press conference.
In addition, according to the spokesman, Russia is preparing to send a delegation to North Korea to discuss this new exchange of arms for food.
At the heart of this new effort, Kirby said, is Slovakia’s Ashot Mkrtychev, who was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department on Thursday for negotiating with North Korea to buy arms for Russia.
The United States accused North Korea of supplying arms to Russia last year. In December in particular, the White House said Pyongyang had passed a package to the Russian mercenary group Wagner that contained missiles and infantry missiles.
According to the US government, sanctions against Russia have forced the Kremlin to turn to other countries with undemocratic governments for access to weapons. In this regard, Washington ensures that Iran has also sent weapons to Russia, particularly drones.
Last February, the United States revealed intelligence that China was considering sending arms to Russia, although such an exchange had not yet taken place. Beijing, for its part, has denied these allegations.
