Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was the talk of the town at the 2022 Beijing Olympics when the then 15-year-old phenom helped the Russian Olympic Committee win a team gold medal.
However, the world fell apart for Valieva and the Russian team when she tested positive for a banned substance. At that time, she tested positive for three different substances that were supposed to improve heart function in a sample taken before her arrival at the Beijing Olympics. She claimed that the banned substance may have resulted from contamination with medication her grandfather regularly took.

On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) disqualified Valieva from the Olympics, meaning the Russians are likely to be stripped of their gold medal in the figure skating team competition. The USA took second place and should instead become Olympic champions.
The CAS imposed a ban on her for four years until December 2025. Her ban applies retroactively to December 2021.

The International Olympic Committee has decided to award any medals for the event in question. The organization said it accepted appeals from the World Anti-Doping Agency asking the court to disqualify and ban Valieva.
A Russian sports court cleared Valieva of any wrongdoing.
“After careful consideration of all the evidence presented to it, the CAS Panel concluded that, on the balance of probabilities and on the basis of the evidence before the Panel, Ms Valieva could not establish that she did not commit the (doping violation) intentionally.” , the court said in a statement.

Russian officials had only suggested that Valieva be disqualified from the national championships and give her the Olympic medal and result. The International Skating Union requested a two-year ban.
