Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York and Prince Andrew's exwife, has been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, an extremely aggressive form of skin cancer. According to the UK Press Association (PA) on Sunday 21st, the diagnosis was confirmed by a spokesman for Ferguson.
The diagnosis came after breast cancer
The melanoma was discovered when several moles were removed and analyzed during breast cancer treatment in June. “After being diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York, has been diagnosed with malignant melanoma,” a spokesperson for the patient said.
Melanoma: high risk in advanced cases
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that arises from the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. It is considered the most serious form of skin cancer because it can quickly spread to other parts of the body and be potentially fatal.
Necessary skin care
This type of cancer can arise in a new mole or develop from an existing one. The risk of developing it is greater in people with fair skin, especially those with freckles or people who get sunburned easily in the sun. Additionally, people with many moles or irregularly shaped moles are at higher risk of developing melanoma.
Ferguson, who had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and had a mastectomy, received a new cancer diagnosis that her spokesperson said was worrying for the Duchess. At 64, she is recovering at home with her family and remains in “good spirits,” according to the PA.
The Duchess thanked the medical professionals who supported her and stressed that the early detection of the disease by her dermatologist highlighted the need for frequent attention to any skin changes.
