Sargassum algae: residents of the François evaluate the effectiveness of their experimental dam 5 years later – Martinique la 1ère – Übersee la 1ère

As in several other municipalities in Martinique, residents of the Frégate 2 district in François are upset by the regular invasion of sargassum on their doorsteps. Five years after financing a net designed to ward off this harmful algae and the interior of the habitat, residents are taking stock of this installation and the setbacks it has caused.

Five years ago, several residents of the Frégate 2 neighborhood in Le François financed the first experimental dam to keep unwanted algae at bay.

As in several other coastal towns on the island, this sargassum causes many problems to local residents in terms of health and deterioration of their household appliances and audiovisual equipment.

“It’s always the same,” explains a Franciscan whose television often goes out. She also fears the effects of gas fumes on her roof.

In order to more effectively combat the stranding of plants that have been regularly coming out of the sea in waves for more than 10 years, new, more efficient equipment is expected in the small bay in 2024. Funding comes entirely from the public purse.
