Scarlett Johansson was left “hopeless” after missing out on a starring role in an Oscar-nominated film.
The 38-year-old actress has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, including the role of Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But things haven’t always been smooth sailing for Johansson, who found herself at a crossroads when she failed to land her dream role in the hit sci-fi thriller Gravity.
“I was turned down for two roles — the first was Iron Man 2 and the other was Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity,” she told Variety. “I wanted this role so badly.”
Johansson said it was “kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back” as the film settled on another actress, Sandra Bullock, to play the two leads alongside George Clooney.
The film was nominated for an Oscar, while Bullock received the Best Actress award.
“I felt really frustrated and hopeless,” recalled the two-time Oscar nominee. “Like, ‘Am I doing the right job?’
“The job I was offered felt deeply unfulfilling. I think I’ve been offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever written. I asked myself, ‘Is this the end of my creative career?’”
There was finally a silver lining for Johansson.

Johansson landed a role in Iron Man 2 after actress Emily Blunt was forced to drop out of the project due to conflicting contractual obligations.
Her role in the film eventually led to Johansson’s own Marvel film, Black Widow.
“This film wouldn’t take a major step forward in terms of how my character was written, but there was potential for what it could be – potential for growth in subsequent films,” she shared.

According to Forbes, Johansson is the highest paid woman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actress’ next big screen project is Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, which is set to hit theaters next month.
And while most actors promote their latest performances on social media, Johansson admitted last month that her fans can’t expect the same from her.

The actress said she refuses to use apps like Instagram because she’s “too fragile a person for social media.”
“I can’t. My ego is too fragile,” she said on Monday’s episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast. “My brain is too fragile. I am like a delicate flower.”

The Marriage Story star said she has “enough fears” in her life without social media.
“I once had Instagram for three days and when I realized I’d spent 20 minutes looking at the Instagram page of someone who worked for a friend of mine,” Johansson said. “I now know that you have a pit bull and two daughters and live in Burbank.”
