Foresters and rangers are searching for the two cubs of the Amarena brown bear, which was shot dead on the edge of a national park in central Italy. The animals, which are around five to six months old, are unable to feed themselves and can become easy prey for wild animals because they are not yet able to defend themselves, the Abruzzo Park administration said.
After a failed attempt to capture the animals, the search for the two young animals continues. The goal is to care for them and release them back into the wild in the coming months. His mother, Amarena, was killed near the community of San Benedetto dei Marsi, in central Italy, by a man who said he felt threatened.
Spectators hinder the search
According to reports, the search is being interrupted by numerous onlookers, which is why the mayor of San Benedetto dei Marsi, Antonio Cerasani, has banned the bears and the special teams in charge of the search. The director of the Abruzzo National Park, Luciano Sammarone, appealed to the population to let the park’s foresters work in peace.
Amarena had walked through villages several times in the past, including with her children. On Thursday, the bear was found dead with gunshot wounds, as announced by the park administration on Facebook. The shooter was located and claimed the bear was on his property. He shot out of fear, but didn’t want to kill the animal. There were death threats against him on social media, which were condemned by the park administration.
