Zoe McKinney reportedly hiked without gear and fell after the group hit a steep area.

Her friends called emergency services for help, but Zoe was reportedly dead when they arrived.

Police rappeled down using ropes and harnesses to reach the 17-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Chief of Police Lex Bell of Moab Police said he knew McKinney and felt the entire community would be heartbroken at her death.

“She’s really well known in the community and I met her,” Bell said. “It’s incredibly tragic.”

McKinney was scheduled to receive an award from her school — Grand County High School — at halftime that night in the college basketball game.

“The timing is even more tragic tonight and what would happen,” Bell added.
