At a hastily called meeting of the UN Security Council, the majority of council members, including the United States, France and Britain, condemned large-scale Russian airstrikes against Ukraine. Ukraine attacked the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border, last night. Russia again launched large-scale airstrikes.
Russia blames Ukraine
Russia, in turn, blamed Kiev for the attacks. The real problem is that Ukraine has installed its air defense systems in residential areas, Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya told an emergency meeting of the World Security Council in New York. “If Ukrainian air defense systems had not been deployed, there would not have been any casualties among the civilian population,” the Russian representative said.
According to the Ukrainian military, the airstrike on Ukraine was the largest since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. 158 drones and missiles were fired at Ukraine, the army leadership said via the short messaging service Telegram. The air defense was able to shoot down 27 drones and 87 cruise missiles.
