Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon says she will join a group of five other US politicians on a hunger strike later this week to bring about a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Nixon, 57, stood outside the White House on Monday with a group of Palestinian supporters holding signs. She concluded: “None of this is normal.” None of this is routine and none of this can continue.”
Nixon, who is the mother of two Jewish children with her ex-husband, wants President Joe Biden to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The actress and political activist said she would take part in the hunger strike for two of the five planned days before returning to work in New York.
According to the Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, at least 14,800 Palestinians – mostly women and children – have been killed in Gaza since Hamas’ brutal surprise attack on Israel on October 7.
“We are here on hunger strike just to reflect to Biden the kind of deprivation that exists in Gaza and how it is within his power to bring about a ceasefire,” Nixon told a group of Israel reporters, according to The Times.

The politicians are taking part in the hunger strike that began on Monday. are New York Rep. Zohran Mamdani, Oklahoma Rep. Mauree Turner, Virginia Rep. Sam Rasoul and Michigan Rep. Abraham Aiyash, as well as Delaware State Rep. Madinah Wilson-Anton, Time reported.
Others who joined the protest included various faith and community leaders.
The former New York gubernatorial candidate participated in an open letter signed by 260 artists addressed to the president and Congress calling for a ceasefire in the region, the publication reported.
Friday marked a humanitarian pause and the start of a four-day ceasefire that officials said began with the release of 10 Israelis, 10 Thai citizens and one Filipino citizen.
In addition, 39 Palestinian women and children were released from three Israeli prisons, CNN reported.
As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 58 hostages – 40 Israelis (including dual nationals), 17 Thai citizens and one Filipino citizen – had been released, the news agency reported.
