Sharad Yadav, former union minister and ex-JD(U) chief, dies aged 75

Former Union Minister and Janata Dal (United) or JDU leader Sharad Yadav died Thursday at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram. He was 75. Yadav’s daughter Subhashini Sharad Yadav also announced on social media, saying “Papa nahi rahe (Dad is no more)”.

He leaves behind his wife, a daughter and a son.

A statement from the Fortis Memorial Research Institute said Yadav was taken to the emergency room in an unconscious and unresponsive condition.

“Shri Sharad Yadav was taken to the Emergency Department of Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram in an unconscious and unresponsive condition. When he was examined, he had neither a pulse nor a measurable blood pressure. He underwent CPR per ACLS protocols. Despite best efforts, he could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m. We would like to offer our deepest condolences to his family,” Fortis said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “painful” over Yadav’s death.

“Sorrow at the passing of Shri Sharad Yadav Ji. During his long years in public life he distinguished himself as a member of parliament and as a minister. He was strong of Dr. Inspired by Lohia’s ideals. I will always appreciate our interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” Modi tweeted.

Bihar Deputy Prime Minister Tejashwi Yadav also expressed shock at the death.

“I am saddened by the news of the untimely death of Mandal Messiah, senior leader of RJD, great socialist leader and my respected guardian Sharad Yadav ji. I can not say anything. Had a talk with mother and brother Shantanu. In this hour of grief, the entire Samajwadi family is with family members,” Yadav tweeted.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge regretted the departure of the socialist leader and said he was strengthening the policy of quality.

Congress also said Yadav’s downfall was an irreparable loss to Indian politics.

Yadav, who had founded his own party Loktantrik Janata Dal, merged with Lalu Yadav’s outfit RJD in March 2020 in what he says is the “first step towards a united opposition”. Yadav had founded Loktantrik Janata Dal in 2018, upset that Janata Dal (United) was returning to an alliance with the BJP in Bihar.

He was a former trade union minister in various governments.
