The jets are finally relevant again and not going away

Markus Cannizzaro

Jets fans have been taking their share of lumps for too long.

You have seen many defeats. They (understandably) complained and grumbled about the loss. And they were amused because of their constant frustration.

However, Jets fans didn’t really ask for much. They didn’t claim a Super Bowl title. They haven’t even adopted a playoffs-or-bust stance.

Really, there’s one thing Jets fans have been looking for for the past decade — since they were last in the playoffs.

Relevance.

Being relevant during the season, not the offseason when they were either looking for a new head coach or general manager or entered the draft with one of the first picks in the first round.

Well, the jets are relevant again. Relevant in the season.

As they prepare for Sunday’s game against the Packers at Lambeau Field, the Jets are 3-2 after winning three of their last four games. Only the Bills and Chiefs, both 4-1, currently have better records than the Jets in the AFC.

And this for the dreamers: If the regular season ended today, the Jets would be the fifth seed in the AFC and are preparing for a playoff game — their first postseason game since the 2010 season.

Of course, five games doesn’t make a season. And certainly, given the excessive amount of scar tissue that has built up over the years, many Jets fans remain nervous and fear that promising 3-2 start is a potential nuisance for another disappointing 6-11 or 5-12 -End of season could be end.

nozzlesJets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (95) celebrates after recovering a fumble in the fourth quarter against the Dolphins.Bill Kostroun

Jets fans are constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I don’t see that as the fate of the Jets this season.

I believe the Jets will remain relevant and in talks for a possible playoff berth well into December because they are a much more talented team than their teams who are 4-13, 2-14, 7-9, 4- 12, 5 went -11 and 5-11 in the last six seasons.

Those previous Jets loser teams didn’t have the defensive differences this team does, including a deep defensive line that found its stride in Sunday’s 40-17 win over the Dolphins.

Quinnen Williams, who plays consistently well, was under pressure six times in the game. Edge rusher Carl Lawson appears to be on the mend after last year’s Achilles surgery. Against the Dolphins, he produced eight quarterback pressures and seven quarterback hits, including a strip sack. One of the unheralded players on the line, John Franklin-Myers, had seven pressings and five hits, including the game where he hit Miami quarterback Skylar Thompson’s arm on a pass intercepted by rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner.

Gardner has managed a completely revamped secondary school after allowing just five receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown in his first five NFL games alongside fellow cornerback DJ Reed, a veteran who was just as tight on opposing receivers.

These flawed Jets teams didn’t have the offensive playmakers that this team has with rookie receiver Garrett Wilson (23 catches for 282 yards and two TDs) and rookie running back Breece Hall (488 yards from scrimmage).

There is indeed a lot to get excited about with this Jets team.

Head coach Robert Saleh’s job, however, is to make sure his young players don’t fall into the trap of having arrived. Because there is still a long way to go to stay relevant for this group.

nozzlesJets coach Robert Saleh.Bill Kostroun

nozzlesThe Jets have given their fans reason to be hopeful. Duncan Williams/Cal Sport Media/

“We won three out of 17 games,” said Saleh. “We still have a long way to go to establish ourselves as a team that can do… anything. If you want to be a great team, winning is you put it on the back shelf and just keep going. We have a big one with Green Bay and we’re going to have a big one next week and another big one after that.

“The ability to split or push, enjoy victory until noon [Monday] and then head straight to Green Bay to take care of your body and prepare as you need it. That’s what championship teams do. We have a long way to go. You have to create consistency.

“It’s great that we’ve been able to make the start that we have, but at the same time it doesn’t mean anything because everything starts over every week.”

This Jets team has wowed its fan base. I have a friend who takes his daughter to every Jets home game, and he texted me after the win over the Dolphins and said, “I’m staying for the fourth quarter now.”

Moose Hunters want answers

Moose: Hunters want answers

Since the season began, many hunters, both archery and rifle, have asked questions about what’s happening to the star big game of our Quebec forests.

Following my column last week, several hunters have contacted me to explain the misadventures they have experienced.

“This year, during the bow hunt, the juvenile partridges were very small. I also saw some very small rabbits. The moose didn’t move at all, didn’t respond to calls and didn’t speak, explained Donald Beaudry of Val-d’Espoir in Gaspésie, who hunts in Zone 1. The current situation is contributing to the abandonment of several hunters who find that it no longer makes sense that it has become a waste of time and money. What does it take to shake things up and bring about some much-needed changes? »

This is a good example of what many hunters have experienced. His opinion reflects many of the messages I’ve received. Our hunter is also aware that this season’s hunt took place during a period of intense autumn heat due to climate change.

“We are in the forest, in the Gaspé mountains, when the weather is not really good. Several successful hunters have lost all their flesh to the heat. Rumor has it that there are more than 16 strays. We have to pay a lot of money for the license, the equipment, the travel. We really feel cheated. »

NATURE DECIDES

Unfortunately, no one is in control of nature, including decision makers at the Department of Forests, Wildlife and Parks.

“Climate change is really a big problem,” explains Pierre Caron, an instructor at the Quebec Federation of Hunters and Fishermen and a former butcher instructor for almost 40 years. Hunters used to be told to gut their animal, hang it up and let the air in to chill the meat because the nights were cool. Today, in September and even October, the nights when the mercury falls below zero are fewer and the days are warm. We must not forget that enemy number one is heat. We must change our habits to adapt to these new conditions over which we have no control. »

He recalls that parrying to show his elk and overheating make the difference between healthy and edible meat and meat that’s heated and automatically lost.

“I advise people to remove the skin as soon as possible and quarter the animal to allow the meat to cool. If the hunters don’t intervene quickly, the meat will be completely lost within 24 to 48 hours as it heats up. No more walks in 2022, especially during bow and crossbow hunting season. The animal is removed in quarters and covered with cheesecloth to keep out dirt and flies. We’ll quickly go to his butcher. »

Hunters who spend their excursions at game reserves and outfitters can rely on cold storage rooms set up on the reserves to precisely counteract the effects of climate change. There, too, they must act quickly to protect their beasts.

HUNTING MACHINE HAS NO IMPACT

Among the testimonies and questions I received was one from Mélanie Bergeron of Rivière-du-Loup, who asked me if there was a difference in the taste of the meat depending on whether the animal was slaughtered with a firearm or a crossbow be.

“Some people claim that there is a difference in the taste of meat from an animal shot with a bow or crossbow. It is absolutely wrong to explain to the experts. Everything is related to time [qu’il faut pour] that the animal will die and what stress it will experience. If the animal is not fatally affected immediately, it will experience significant stress. At this point there will be an impact on the quality of the meat. It is therefore necessary for the hunter to touch the animal in a vital area so that everything is done quickly, regardless of the type of hunting equipment used. »

Other factors can directly affect the quality of the meat people consume.

“The age of the animal can make a difference, or even if a male is slaughtered during the rut when the sex glands are very active. The tenderness of the meat is often determined by how long the animal has been exposed to heat after slaughter. This has a direct effect on the maturation of the meat, which has to hang in the butcher’s cold room for several days. Those are the real factors that affect the outcome on the plate, if you can call it that. »

PRECAUTIONS

This method remains the same for all big game species. Currently, the elk hunting season is over or nearing its end in several areas. Deer hunting is started with bow and crossbow or started for firearm hunters. It will be necessary to take precautions to take good care of your game once it is slaughtered if you want to benefit from it.

A final piece of advice from Pierre Caron at the end of the interview: “There are fewer and fewer butchers processing game meat. It is therefore necessary for hunters to reserve a spot before heading into the forest so as not to be caught off guard. »

Young warriors create fierce squad competition in training camp

Young warriors create fierce squad competition in training camp

SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr has a special name for beginning Warriors practice: The Golden Hour.

The first hour begins with the veterans working in the weight room or exercise room and receiving the treatment their bodies need. The judgment at this point is only for the youngsters. It’s all about repetition, repetition and more repetition, physically and mentally. This can mean drills, 5v0, or just going through concepts.

During this year’s training camp and throughout preseason, the first hour of training, along with young warriors meeting elders, was very productive with what Kerr wanted to achieve.

Joined by Jordan Poole, who reached star status at 23, leading the Warriors’ young core are James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. Kerr admitted Monday that Wiseman is even further than he expected at the time. On the same day, he praised Kuminga for his understanding of how to be successful on the Warriors offense, his on-ball defense, attitude and approach. All of that was rewarded with a start Sunday at Power Forward in the Warriors’ preseason loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Moody remains trusted and was the first player off the bench in preseason, with Poole starting at shooting guard while Klay Thompson continued to climb ahead of the season opener.

What Kerr really noticed is the Warriors’ players making first impressions, battling for spots with the big roster and Golden State’s G-League affiliate in Santa Cruz.

“Young people are really making progress,” Kerr said Monday. “I think this is one of the best crops of young free agents we’ve had here. Perhaps the best, given the boys battling for two-way spots and possible Santa Cruz players. Really impressive.

“Every one of them is a good player and they compete and they have set a great tone for our camp.”

Kerr and the Warriors have already said goodbye to Mac McClung and Trevion Williams, a decision the head coach said was not an easy one and the Warriors own Williams’ G-League rights. McClung is expected to play in the Philadelphia 76ers’ G-League system this season.

That leaves Quinndary Weatherspoon, Lester Quinones, Ty Jerome, Pat Spencer, Jerome Robinson and Anthony Lamb, as well as rookie draft picks Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins as players urging the organization to believe in them.

Weatherspoon and Quinones currently hold the Warriors’ two-way contracts. In his second season as a Warrior, Weatherspoon is much more comfortable with the system and understanding plays. He also says he’s gained more confidence in his wide shot, an area of the game that would give the defensively-focused guard a big boost of opportunities.

So far this preseason, Weatherspoon is 6-on-8 off the field and has made his only 3-point attempt.

Once this year’s draft wrapped, the Warriors took the opportunity to add quinones. They remain drawn to what the Memphis product can offer.

“Lester is a really fascinating prospect,” Kerr said. “He’s very athletic, good height, combo guard and good passer. He can really finish on the edge. He’s an interesting prospect that we’ve liked all summer and he’s continued to perform well here at camp.

“We’ll see how everything develops.”

With a spot still open on the 15-man list, Weatherspoon has the cleanest path to claiming the honor. But all indications are that the Warriors will most likely keep it open going into the regular season. And Ty Jerome could complicate things for the big picture.

Jerome, 25, essentially replaced McClung on the training camp roster and is a much better fit as a pass first guard with better size and more NBA experience. The former first-round pick stands 6-foot-5, has three years in pro play on his record, and shot 42.3 percent from deep as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2020-21 season.

His first run as a Warrior wasn’t smooth, turning the ball off the bench three times in six minutes on Sunday night, but Kerr isn’t overreacting to the small sample size.

“Yeah, Ty’s a vet,” Kerr said Monday. “I think that was really the appeal for us. He’s played a lot of point guard in the league. He’s a good size, he’s a good passer. We felt he would fit in well with our squad and based on his experience, we don’t feel we need to see that much from him.

“We’ve seen him live many times.”

Of all the new names popping up daily at the Chase Center, Spencer is by far the biggest joker — for a number of reasons. After a dominant four-year lacrosse career at Loyola and winning the Heisman Trophy of collegiate lacrosse as a junior, Spencer used his grad year to play basketball with Northwestern. In his only season in college basketball, Spencer averaged 10.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Golden State hold the 26-year-old’s G-League rights and Kerr is loving what he’s seen of him.

“Big fan of Pat,” Kerr said. “Great competitor, great athletics in terms of his balance and coordination and core strength. He jumps with more explosiveness than I thought. He had the game in Tokyo where he attempted to dun the entire team and was fouled.

“I think it’s great that he’s a lacrosse guy. I think sports like soccer and hockey and lacrosse create a kind of vision that you need in basketball, where you have to see the field in front of you or the court in front of you and position everything – I think all those things are helpful for Pat.

“He has to play. He just doesn’t have much basketball experience. He’s a really fascinating prospect.”

RELATED: Wiggins enters the new season after shedding the weight of negativity

Baldwin and Rollins are on guaranteed contracts and will be spending time in San Francisco and Santa Cruz this season. Rollins has struggled with his shot so far, although the Warriors remain optimistic about his long-term prospects. He and a handful of the younger players should get plenty of run Tuesday night in the Warriors’ fourth preseason game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

In three preseason games, Baldwin continues to look like a thief with the #28 draft pick and could earn some really meaningful minutes as a rookie. The 6-foot-9 forward has made seven of his 12 shots from deep and looks like a real threat from beyond the arc.

Spoken like the son of a true coach whose maturity at 19 is well beyond his age, Baldwin takes it all in during his first training camp and is always inviting to any type of competition.

“I think it’s a cliché — iron sharpens iron,” Baldwin said Monday. “And I think that has come true. We have all this talent fighting for positions, but we’re brothers too. We push each other in a great way. When we are in the dressing room we exchange information with each other and when we are on the pitch we exchange information with each other.

“Competition is the best way to get better.”

Kylian Mbappe makes history at PSG

By: Luis Imana

Amid rumors distancing him from PSG on the next transfer market, Kylian Mbappe He has shown his great commitment to the Parisian club after the group stage draw with Benfica UEFA Champions League.

‘Donatello’ proved from the start to be the most unbalanced player in the France squad and the most complicated for the ‘Eagle’ defence.

After several arrivals in the opponent’s area, the ‘7’ had his long-awaited opportunity at 40′ when the referee awarded a penalty after Antonio Silva fouled Juan Bernat. Mbappé didn’t hesitate to grab the ball and score the first goal of the game from twelve strides.

Although Benfica wiped out the party at the Parc des Princes with a Joao Mario penalty (62′) to make it 1-1, Kylian set a new record in European competition with PSG.

With his goal, the 2018 Russian champions scored 31 goals and surpassed Edinson Cavani (30) as the top scorer in PSG history in the Champions League.

Meringues one step

Real Madrid salvaged a vital point after beating Shakhtar 1-1 at Wojska Polskiego Stadion and are within reach of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti made some changes to the eleven reflecting on the weekend’s clash against Barcelona and that there was a collective decline against an experienced Ukrainian team.

The Donetsk team struck the first blow at 46 minutes thanks to a header from Oleksandr Zubkov that fell on the merengue team like a bucket of cold water.

The Spanish team suffered a lot to achieve Shakhtar’s goal and even the local team came close to scoring the second goal.

When it looked like Real Madrid would leave Warsaw empty-handed, Antonio Rudiger (95′) gave up everything to score the final tie with his head, for which he received a severe punch in the face from the goalkeeper and required medical attention.

Yesterday’s other games ended as follows: Maccabi Haifa (2-0) Juventus Copenhagen (0-0) Manchester City Dinamo Zagreb (1-1) RB Salzburg Borussia Dortmund (1-1) Sevilla AC Milan (0-0) 2 ) Chelsea and Celtic (0:2) RB Leipzig.

Barcelona and Inter meet at the Camp Nou

The Azulgranas will seek revenge when they host the ‘Neroazzurri’ in Group C’s fourth date today (14:00 CEST). Barcelona, third with three points, have fallen by just the slightest difference against Inter. Second with 6 points, at Giuseppe Meazza and will go out to impose his locality.

The word

Christophe Galtier, PSG technician

“Kylian gave a very good response, he was a goalscorer, creative and dangerous. He could have scored a second goal. He gritted his teeth to see it through to the end, despite suffering a tough duel.”

Kenny Pickett deserves Bills respect for standing up to Shaq

Kenny Pickett deserves Bill’s respect for standing up to Shaq Lawson: ‘It takes a lot of courage for a QB’

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have lost Sunday’s fight, but…well, they didn’t win the war either. But their new quarterback at least showed some potential and some spirit. Already showing a willingness to take hits as part of the game, Kenny Pickett also showed the tenacity to hold his own against a very questionable hit.

Pickett was hit in the knee by Buffalo Bills defenseman Shaq Lawson about a minute to play on a 4th and 17th throw in a 35-point game. He shoved Lawson in response, which resulted in a penalty for himself – none for the defender. But his reaction was widely praised – even by Bills players.

“I liked it,” Buffalo wide receiver Stefon Diggs said on The Voncast, a podcast hosted by teammate Von Miller. “Shit, he’s not my quarterback, so he’s still the ops, but when I saw him do that, I was like, ‘It takes a quarterback to push a D-lineman, especially one like that.”

“Shaq’s no chump,” he continued. “It showed that he is strong. And his teammates came and supported him, so firstly you have to show him some respect and secondly be like, alright, he has some shit with them. He’s not your normal little run-of-the-mill, Imma just takes it by the chin.”

One would hope that, for the most part, NFL players don’t try to physically harm one another. I don’t know what kind of shot Lawson was aiming for, but the one he delivered to Pickett was certainly dangerous as it landed in the knee area.

Pickett said so after the game when asked why he reacted to Lawson the way he did, telling reporters that from his perspective at the moment, he felt like the defender was going to get on his knee after the throw.

And it wasn’t the first hit he’d suffered throughout the day. The first, which was questionable, even came from a former college teammate, Damar Hamlin, who was slammed by guard James Daniels – who was also widely praised in the dressing room. But even Bills’ defensemen appreciated their rival quarterback’s fire.

“I don’t think it’s that much about the hit Shaq gave him,” Miller said. “I think it was like, ‘Our result and the situation we are in is not acceptable. It won’t be us. This is my first start, but I’ll show you I don’t accept this shit. That is not good for me'”.

In other words, they want their own quarterback to react the same way when faced with the same situation. And it makes matters worse when it seems obvious officials aren’t protecting him in the same way as other quarterbacks, as Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said in his post-game press conference.

The Canadian is sticking to his recovery plan. Five rookies make up his 23-man roster at the start of the season.

Four of those are defensemen, including Johnathan Kovacevic, who was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets on waivers. Two of those players will be assigned to the Laval Rocket when Joel Edmundson and Mike Matheson are able to play.

We can assume that Kaiden Guhle will not be. The Habs’ first draft pick of 2020 showed in training camp that he’s capable of playing in the National League this year.

Jordan Harris starts with a lead over Arber Xhekaj, but Xhekaj’s strength of character and fiery temper could allow him to shuffle the cards.

Slafkowski had to stay

It would have been disappointing for Juraj Slafkovsky if he hadn’t started the season in Montreal.

A stay in Laval would not and would not be the end of the world if the situation required it. But his status as the first choice for the 2022 vintage gave him an advantage.

Now it’s up to him to make progress.

The 18-year-old would silence a lot of people if he managed to stay at the big club all winter.

This would be cause for celebration for the organization and its supporters.

Fans want to be able to live with hope during this time of reconstruction. Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield have earned their trust, but they’d love to see another youngster or two break into the Habs this season.

It would set the course for the years to come.

The future is in the future, as the late Larry Chiasson, Expos’ first director of media relations, said reassuringly.

Four Burning Falls for St-Louis

On the other hand, we have to see how Martin St-Louis will compose with Jonathan Drouin, Joel Armia, Mike Hoffman, Evgenii Dadonov, four players at a crossroads.

Here we will be able to judge the power of the young coach.

If those four players don’t get the job done and St. Louis stays true to itself, he’s not going to put up with it for very long.

Drouin’s last chance

Eyes are mostly on Drouin, a man from home who has been making everyone hungry since arriving in Montreal.

Can we still believe in Drouin?

Putting aside the injuries that have weighed on his last three seasons.

It was hoped Dominique Ducharme, who had managed him at the Halifax Mooseheads, had some influence on him.

The desired effect did not occur.

Well, if Drouin is as lucky as he says he is to play under St. Louis orders, let him prove it.

His coach will give him a chance, but he has to go full throttle and be more aggressive in his game overall.

Drouin plays his last card.

And not just in Montreal…
