Study: Europe surpasses the US in aid news

Europe has increased its aid to Ukraine and, according to one study, has significantly surpassed the US. In the period up to 31 July, the value of the total volume pledged by European donors amounted to 156 billion euros, compared to almost 70 billion euros from the USA, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) announced today. “For the first time since the start of the war, the United States is now clearly behind.”

The main reason for this is the European Union’s new “Ukraine Mechanism”, worth €50 billion. But other European countries have also increased their support with new multi-year packages. “It is remarkable how quickly Europe has moved to a permanent, multi-year support program for Ukraine,” said IfW expert Christoph Trebesch. In the first year of the war, the US still led.

After the USA, Germany is the largest donor of financial, humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine, with 38.2 billion euros pledged. According to the IfW, Austria’s short- and multi-year bilateral aid commitments amount to 0.2% of its own GDP. Private donations and donations from international organizations are not included in the data.
