Taiwan’s defense ministry reports the presence of 13 Chinese aircraft and seven military ships around the island. “The presence of 13 aircraft and seven naval units of the People’s Liberation Army was detected – he reports via Twitter – the Taiwanese armed forces have been monitoring the situation.” Taipei has deployed its aircraft and naval units to surveillance activities “in response to these activities” of the Asian giant and land-based Missile systems activated. According to the Defense Ministry, a JH-7 fighter-bomber penetrated the northeastern part of the island’s air defense zone (Adiz).

The news comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to arrive in Beijing for talks between tomorrow and Monday. Beijing regards the de facto independent island, which counts on US support, as an “inalienable part” of its territory and is aiming for “reunification”. The escalation of tensions began with a visit to the island in August last year by then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
