A new generation of Samsung’s largest folding smartphone is expected to see the light of day later this year: the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and its folding display in book format. If the smartphone is not expected until the summer of 2023, dozens of serious rumors have already surfaced online. We take stock of the hypothetical spec sheet of Samsung’s next most expensive smartphone.

Since the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, it has become an annual event. In 2023, the South Korean manufacturer Samsung is expected to launch a new version of its foldable smartphone: the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Four years after the announcement of the first mobile phone with a foldable screen, Samsung will have successively improved its recipe to make its Bringing fans the best of mobile technology. But the company is no longer alone in the market and after a Galaxy Z Fold 4 very similar to the previous one, Samsung must therefore update its range to confirm its lead.
According to South Korean media The Elec, an internal meeting detailed the points to be improved from November 2022: “to make the phones lighter and thinner and more durable, to reduce the crease on the screen, to have a specific location for the S Pen and improve the camera”. We will see that if some goals seem to have been achieved, not all of them have. We summarize everything for you.
The first waterproof teardrop hinge
Earlier this year, in our letter to Dad Samsung, we kindly asked that he “keep on with the folding chairs” for 2023. It is quite clear that it is catching up with its competitors, especially in terms of screen technology. Whether it’s Oppo with the Find N2 or Honor with the Magic Vs, these two Fold smartphones released in late 2022 have a screen that leaves a much less noticeable crease mark than the Galaxy Z Fold 4, while leaving no gap between the two halves of the smartphone inside closed state.
Samsung seems to have listened to us! Or rather, after adapting to the innovations of its competitors: mid-January 2023, a first tweet from the leaker ice universe claimed that the next Z Fold 5 would feature a new “teardrop” hinge, dubbed the “anvil hinge” by the company, while being as waterproof as the Z Fold 4. Information also mentioned by South Korean blog Naver in the same period, then repeated once again by Ice Universe End of February. Probably, because the South Korean manufacturer already patented a similar technology in 2016.

It’s the same technology that powers Oppo and Honor smartphones, but their models aren’t waterproof. Samsung offers the best of both approaches: a hinge that leaves little trace on the screen and completely closes the smartphone while maintaining the “IPX8” water certification, according to a tweet from Samsungice universe Released late March 2023. The “X” of this certification, on the other hand, means that the smartphone still does not promise protection against dust. Enough to be a step ahead of its competitors internationally … and simply adapt the hinge of the new Huawei Mate X3 in the Chinese market.
First shots with tweezers
This rumor can also be found in unofficial 3D renderings of the upcoming smartphone. At the end of March 2023, the YouTube channel of technician shared on Twitter computer-generated images of what the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 could look like, based on information from the South Korean leaker and youtuber Super Roader.
In these images, the product has almost identical dimensions to the Z Fold 4, but folds nicely without leaving any space between its two halves. A design consistent with previous rumours, but to be taken with caution for lack of accurate sources.
A template that may not change much
Because of this hypothetical new hinge, some dimensions of the Z Fold 5 should be reduced. While Vietnamese site The Pixel mentioned a smartphone in January 2023 that was perhaps heavier than its predecessor, going from 263 to 275 grams, the leaker is ice universemore reliable, said in a message published on his Twitter account in late March 2023 that the phone would instead be lighter: a product that would weigh “254 grams,” which is 9 grams lighter than the Z Fold 4. If confirmed, however, that small difference might not even be felt in the hand.
In the same tweet, Ice Universe also hinted that the thickness of the Z Fold 5 would also change with a possible new hinge: “After folding, the gap [entre les deux moitiés d’écran] disappears and [le smartphone] getting thinner,” according to the leaker, from 15.8mm to “13mm.” The same applies here: If this change is visually noticeable, Samsung’s largest folding smartphone will continue to take up space in your trouser pocket.
Finally, the size of the smartphone’s external screen could remain the same. ice universe also claims in a tweet published in early March 2023 that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 would come with a “6.2-inch” panel like the Z Fold 4. It’s not specified if the screen will keep the same 23:9 ratio, but we can guess. This fifth model of the Galaxy Z Fold could therefore remain narrow in use when folded.
A more innovative touchscreen?
Another hallway noise passed by this universally reliable leak: a “new touchscreen technology” mentioned in his summary of the rumours, posted at the end of March 2023. This information would mark a significant change compared to previous generations of the Galaxy Z Fold, but the wording remains too vague to draw any conclusions at the moment. However, other rumors could say more in the coming months.
S Pen or not S Pen, that is the question
The presence of a long-awaited feature for fans of Samsung’s foldable smartphone has been discussed in recent months, according to rumors. While it’s already possible to use an S Pen stylus on the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the phone doesn’t offer a storage option as was the case with Samsung’s Galaxy Note range.

Two rumors spread by South Korean media The Elec in November 2022 and then by Vietnamese site The Pixel in January 2023 claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could be the first generation to allow the stylus to be locked in the smartphone stow away However, an article published by the South Korean news site ET News in early February suggests that after several internal tests, Samsung finally decided not to include this novelty. According to the media, the question is: the space that a possible new hinge will take up. Samsung wouldn’t have given up on the idea, but it will have to wait for a next version of the Galaxy Z Fold to see this.
A probable rationale, although we’ll await the final design of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Then again, it’s likely that Samsung’s next folding model will retain S Pen compatibility even without a slot.
Conflicting rumors about the photo
Another source of many rumors: the photo modules of the next Z Fold 5. As of July 2022, South Korean media The Elec (via Android Central) put forward that two of the next smartphone sensors could be improved. If the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the first model in the range to offer a 50-megapixel resolution for its wide-angle camera, The Elec then claimed that the other two modules (ultra wide-angle at 12 MP and telephoto at 10 MP) would also get their definition up increase the same value.
In mid-January 2023, it was Vietnamese media The Pixel’s turn to claim that the main wide-angle sensor could switch from 50 to 108 megapixels, as has been the case for several Samsung flagships since 2020. Information that doesn’t seem too far-fetched.
However, the treat ice universe contradicted this information on Twitter in early March, stating that the Z Fold 5 would be equipped with the “same module” and that it was “impossible to use the HP2”, i.e. the 200 megapixel module available on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra , released February 2023. The wording remains rather imprecise, but we can conclude that it is the main module, hence the same current 50 megapixel wide angle.
The doubt therefore remains, but the more recent nature of this latest information suggests that the next Z-Fold may not change its choice of photo modules. This decision wouldn’t be surprising either, since the definition of the wide-angle camera has already changed between the Z Fold 3 and Fold 4, it’s rare for Samsung to update its sensors two years in a row.
A state-of-the-art Qualcomm processor
The very first expanded information on this upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 arrived earlier this year. Again, South Korean news site The Elec claimed to know the next processor to be integrated into the smartphone… from July 2022!
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 hadn’t even come out yet when the media was already talking about a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip for Samsung’s next two folding models, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. An announcement maybe premature, but more recent Time confirmed by leaker ice universegenerally reliable, in a tweet posted in mid-March 2023.
Credible info as all previous Galaxy Z Fold models came with Qualcomm’s latest premium chip. Therefore, after our tests of this processor, we can assume that the smartphone is faster and more responsive, but moderately warms up even during long gaming sessions.
Same but more modern storage options
The storage capacity variants on offer could also remain the same: according to a source quoted by the specialist site Sam Mobile at the end of February, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could be available in 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB versions … the same choices as the Z Fold currently offers 4 offers.
However, all storage options for the fifth generation of Samsung’s folding smartphone could offer UFS 4.0 flash storage technology, according to Sammobile. Compared to the Z Fold 4, this standard would double the speed of reading and writing files.
Some characteristics we can guess
Even without rumors from the corridors or sources close to the manufacturer, we can imagine without too much risk that certain characteristics of the Z Fold 4 will stay the same with the Z Fold 5 or logically evolve towards the latest technology available.
First, in terms of the operating system. Galaxy Z series smartphones have always integrated the latest version of Android available at the time of their release; the Galaxy Z Fold 5 should therefore be sold under the Samsung One UI 5.1 based on Android 13. The South Korean manufacturer also offers four major Android updates and five years of security patches for newer models.
On the other hand, if we don’t know yet whether the size of the internal or external screens will change, we can assume that they retain both Amoled technology and the 120Hz refresh rate present on the Z Fold 4 and are still below the best in the premium smartphone market.
Eventually, Bluetooth connectivity would naturally evolve towards the latest version of this technology, from Bluetooth 5.2 to 5.3.
A price that is likely to remain high
No media or leaker has given an exact retail price for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, but we can still assume that this model, like its predecessor, will be one of the most expensive smartphones in the world. Innovation comes at a price: the Z Fold 4 was marketed at 1799 euros when it was launched in France in August 2022.
If the technical improvements rumored to be confirmed, the selling price could even rise, given the rise in the price of raw materials and consumer goods. Therefore, based on the projected inflation for 2023, we can assume that the product will be sold between 1800 and 1900 euros.
When will the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 be released?
Samsung usually announces its two folding smartphones in the Galaxy Z series around the same time every year. Be it the Z Fold 2, 3 or 4, all were officially unveiled in early August. This could therefore still be the case for the Z Fold 5, which is expected in early August 2023.
Likewise, the last three models were then marketed two weeks after their presentation. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 would therefore be sold from mid-August 2023.
