AI generated text could increase exposure to threats identifying malicious or
Anthropic, a startup co-founded by former OpenAI employees, launched an AI model called Claude last week to compete with ChatGPT. The company says its AI can be tasked with a range of tasks, including searching through documents, summarizing, writing and coding, and answering questions on specific topics. Additionally, Anthropic argues that “Claude is much less likely to produce harmful results and is easier to manipulate” than other AI chatbots. She added that two versions of the AI model, Claude and Claude Instant, are available.

Anthropic markets itself as an AI security and research company that strives to build reliable, interpretable, and controllable AI systems. The startup benefits from the backing of Google, from which it received $300 million in funding earlier this year. This makes Google the latest giant in the tech industry to put its money and computing power to work for a new generation of companies trying to make their mark in the burgeoning field of generative AI. Microsoft has been doing this since 2019, investing $1 billion in OpenAI, and then several more billions earlier this year.

In January, Anthropic announced that it was working on Claude, a large language model (LLM) intended to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT (GPT-3.5). Claude is comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but according to Anthropic, its AI chatbot is superior to OpenAI’s in a number of important respects. The entire system was in closed beta and few people had access, but the company announced the general availability of its tool last week. Two versions of the AI model, Claude and Claude Instant, are now available to a limited group of early adopters and Anthropic Associates.

Claude can be used via an API or a chat interface in the Anthropic developer console. The API allows developers to remotely connect to Anthropic’s servers and add Claude’s parsing and text-completion capabilities to their applications. We believe Claude is the right tool for a variety of customers and use cases. “We have been investing in our infrastructure to serve models for several months and are confident in our ability to meet customer demand,” a spokesman for Anthropic said in a TechCrunch statement.

Anthropic’s AI model grew out of primary concerns about the future safety of AI, and the startup trained it using a technique it calls “constitutional AI.” The technique aims to provide a principles-based approach to aligning AI systems with human intent, allowing AIs like ChatGPT to respond to queries using a set of simple principles as a guide. To design Claude, the Anthropic team began by creating a list of about ten core principles that together form a kind of “constitution” (hence the term constitutional AI).

Similar to ChatGPT, Claude is capable of performing a variety of conversational and word processing tasks. It is designed to help users with summaries, research, co-writing, coding and more. According to Anthropic, one of Claude’s key differences is that it’s designed to deliver less harmful results than most other AI chatbots that have come before it. Claude is described as a “useful, honest and harmless AI system”. Anthropic adds that it’s easy to use and manage, so you can get the results you want with less effort.

Anthropic admits that Claude has his limitations, some of which came to light during the closed beta. For example, Claude would be less good at math and less good at programming than ChatGPT. Claude hallucinates, for example, making up a name for a chemical that doesn’t exist and giving questionable instructions for making weapons-grade uranium. It’s also possible to bypass Claude’s security filters through clever prompts, as is the case with ChatGPT. A beta user managed to get Claude to describe how to make meth at home.

Anthropic believes the hallucination issue is a sensitive issue for AI companies. The challenge is to create models that never hallucinate and are still useful. We can get into a sticky situation where the model thinks a good way to never lie is to say nothing at all, so there’s a compromise we’re working on. We’ve made progress in reducing hallucinations, but there’s still a long way to go,” said the Anthropic spokesperson. The company also plans to give developers the ability to customize Claude’s Constitutional Principles to suit their own needs.

Customer acquisition is another goal of the startup. Anthropic sees its core users as “startups making bold tech bets” alongside “bigger, more established companies.” It’s facing some pressure from investors to recoup the hundreds of millions of dollars invested in its AI technology. Besides Google, it has strong support from investors such as Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and former CEO of FTX, Caroline Ellison, former CEO of Alameda Research, Jim McClave, Nishad Singh, Jaan Tallinn and the Center for Research on Emerging Risks.

The connections between Anthropic and the protagonists of the FTX saga, in this case Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried, are criticized. Anthropic reportedly received a hefty sum of $580 million from FTX executives who are now facing charges of fraud and securities fraud, among other charges. The question arose whether this money could be recovered by a court. Additionally, Anthropic and FTX are believed to be linked to the effective altruism movement, which former Google researcher Timnit Gebru calls “a dangerous hallmark of AI safety.”

The company has announced that Claude and Claude Instant will be sold under two different price lists. Claude is a high performance model while Claude Instant is lighter, cheaper and much faster. Fees are charged per million characters input and output. While OpenAI’s GPT-3.5-turbo is priced at $0.002 for 1,000 tokens (fragments of a word), Claude Instant is available for $0.42 per million characters input and $1.45 per million characters output . Claude-v1, the largest model, is priced at $2.90 per million characters input and $8.60 per million characters output.

Although there is no standard conversion between tokens and characters, analysts estimate that OpenAI’s ChatGPT API costs between $0.40 and $0.50 per million characters, meaning Claude is generally more expensive. However, Anthropic believes Claude has already been integrated into several products available through partners, including Instant Summary’s DuckAssist by DuckDuckGo, part of Notion AI, and a chat application called Poe, developed by Quora. Other launch partners – including Robin AI and AssemblyAI – are said to have built Claude into their products.

We use Claude to evaluate certain parts of a contract and suggest a new, more user-friendly alternative language to our customers. We found that Claude is very good at understanding language, including in technical areas such as legal language. He is also very adept at writing, summarizing, translating and explaining complex concepts in simple terms,” said Richard Robinson, CEO of Robin AI.

Anthropic has announced that it will be rolling out even more updates in the coming weeks to make Claude more useful, honest, and harmless. According to some analysts, given Google’s announced plans for Bard and the PaLM API, it seems unlikely that Google will rely on Anthropic for AI solutions in its products, but funding from an OpenAI competitor could be in Google’s strategic interest going forward .

Faster than SSD? The DDRAMDisk wants to increase the storage space of our PCs – Frandroid

Faster than SSDs: That’s what DDRAMDisk memory promises, which uses RAM chips via NVMe.

Faster than SSD The DDRAMDisk wants to increase the storageImage generated by Frandroid via Midjourney, we did what we could to illustrate this unusual article

You didn’t understand anything from the capo of the article, we’ll translate it for you: SSDs are fast, but not fast enough for certain applications. The built-in flash memory reaches its limits, especially with random access. This is the premise of DDRAMDisk. The name is barbaric, but very explicit: it’s about using RAM memory as storage.

Record read and write speeds

It works: In this configuration, the performance is simply impressive. When reading and writing sequentially in Crystalmark, the DDR4-based configuration reaches 15 and 14.7 Gb/s, and with random access (RND4K Q32T16) the speeds remain very high: 3.4 and 3.77 Gb/s.

1679339741 18 Faster than SSD The DDRAMDisk wants to increase the storage

Performance could be even better, but the limit is at the connectivity layer: the eight PCIe Gen 4 lanes. However, compared to flash memory, RAM memory has one major disadvantage: without power, data is lost. To correct this, they use a battery cell built into the module.

Integration is difficult…

In addition, there is another problem. You need a huge box (with 18 memory modules) that is well ventilated (because it produces a lot of heat). We’ll let you judge the photo below and imagine yourself on your PC. In short, not in everyone’s hands.

When and at what price the third version of the DDRAMDisk will be available is not known. As a reminder, the first version was sold at 256GB for $320. In addition, the semiconductor crisis continues to cause setbacks in the entire hardware industry.

MG4 vs MG5: Which is the better electric car? – Frandroid

Which of the MG4 or MG5 will win? It’s time to compare: design, range, price, driving experience, volume… We’re going to examine these two electric cars to decide which will be the best.

MG4 vs MG5 Which is the better electric car

MG hits hard in the world of electric vehicles, always with the same method: to offer cars with excellent value for money. We are going to verify this today by comparing two references from the manufacturer: the MG4 and the MG5.

There are plenty of cars that have rubbed shoulders with the MG4 and we have to admit that so far it’s been unanimously accepted. Its looks and intrinsic qualities make it an easy recommendation.

Not everything is won in advance, because the manufacturer’s electric station wagon, the MG5, is not lacking in advantages either. By being switched on another new segment for electroIf you are looking for a practical vehicle, you should be interested in the MG5 at a relatively low price.

Dimensions, weight and exterior design

The MG4 is not compact, as he measures 4.29 meters long, 1.84 meters wide and 1.50 meters high. We’ll see below that the habitability is pretty good, proving that MG is making good use of this honorable length.

The MG4 features the eye-catching design elements: aggressive hood, remarkable light signature and extraordinary colors. It must be admitted that the pencil line is well done.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the MG5, which is decided more practical than pretty. Its lines are very classic for a station wagon, and although this one is electric, it does not stand out from the other vehicles on the market.

MG5-2022-044 MG5-2022-047

Definitely longer than the MG4, The MG5 has to prove that its 4.60 meter length is an advantage in terms of usable volume. In width (1.82 meters) and height (1.51 meters) it is very similar to the MG4. To conclude the spec sheet, note a weight of 1655-1685 kilograms for the MG4 versus 1562 kilograms for the MG5.

In terms of design, this is clearly about the MG4, which provides a welcome breath of fresh air and will probably attract a few looks.

Inside

With its 30 centimeters less, the MG4 does not compete with the MG5 in terms of trunk volume. As a matter of fact, the MG4 indicates 363 liters of available volume, versus 479 liters for the MG5 (32% more).

mg4-funding-1 MG4-2_Result

In practice, of course, this means that the MG5 is more suitable for traveling with luggage. Unfortunately with the rear seats folded down the bottom of the MG5 is not levelwhich is generally one of the advantages of station wagons.

In terms of interior design, the MG4 is fairly minimalist, with generous space for the first and second row passengers, where the MG5 has a very imposing center console at the front, separating the two occupants.

MG5-2022-059 MG5-2022-057

Also, the floor of the MG5 is quite high, making long journeys difficult for tall people. We didn’t find this issue with the MG4, which wins this point for its more practical front-end space and decent boot space considering its size.

Embedded Technologies

Both vehicles of the manufacturer MG, MG4 and MG5 are largely similar in terms of onboard technologies. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are also in play, as is a range of Level 2 driver assistance systems.

MG4-16_Result MG4-12_Result

Adaptive cruise control like Lane Keeping Assist is offered, although the operation isn’t excellent. These aids have the benefit of being present from the entry-level MG4 onwards, which is rare enough to warrant emphasis.

Regarding the available screens, on the MG4, as on the MG5, we find two with the usual layout: one behind the steering wheel for the instrumentation and one in the center of the dashboard for the infotainment part.

MG5-2022-064

For their similarities in terms of embedded technologies, it is a tie between the two MGs of this comparison.

Traveling

Smaller, The MG4 is also more agile on the roadespecially with a standing start: 7.7 seconds are enough to reach 100 km/hand winding roads are good for the smaller MG.

1679335923 330 MG4 vs MG5 Which is the better electric car

In terms of consumption, we note around 18 kWh per 100 kilometers, enough to guarantee a range of around 350 kilometers with the 64 kWh battery under real conditions.

We immediately notice a few flaws in the MG5 that the MG4 doesn’t have. The swaying of the body is clearly noticeable with rather soft suspension. Add to that a tricky driving position for big boys and you have a combination that barely beats the MG4.

1679335924 817 MG4 vs MG5 Which is the better electric car

The consumption is also higher (around 20 kWh/100 km in our test) and also a defeat in terms of performance, because that 0 to 100 km/h is announced in 8.3 secondsS

Finally, neither of the two MGs offers the famous single-pedal drive, as the manufacturer chose too little regenerative braking. Be that as it may, the advantage of the MG4 is in terms of road holding.

The different engines offered

The MG5 is currently offered in two configurations:

  • Range Standard all-wheel drive, traction with 50 kWh battery: 130 kW front motor, 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds, top speed 185 km/h;
  • Range Extended all-wheel drive, traction with 61 kWh battery: 115 kW front motor, 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds, top speed 185 km/h;

MG4-9 MG5-2022-010

The same applies to the MG4, which is available in two different engines:

  • 170 hp engine, drive with 51 kWh battery: 125 kW rear engine, 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, top speed 160 km/h;
  • 203 hp motor, traction with 64 kWh battery: 150 kW rear motor, 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, top speed 160 km/h.

Autonomy, battery and charging

We find two different battery capacities on the MG4: 51 or 64 kWh. In the first case, the announced WLTP autonomy is 350 kilometers, in the second – 450 kilometers.

1679335927 700 MG4 vs MG5 Which is the better electric car

Another difference between the two is the power of the onboard charger. For the 51 kWh battery it is 7 kW in AC versus 11 kW for the 64 kWh battery. In both cases, this makes it possible to fill the battery in almost seven hours.

Finally, fast charging is included with 10 to 80% in 35 to 40 minutes. The same goes for the MG5, which takes 40 minutes to reach 80%.

1679335929 28 MG4 vs MG5 Which is the better electric car

The WLTP range of the MG5 is either 320 kilometers with the 50 kWh battery or 400 kilometers with the 61 kWh battery. Finally, an 11 kW on-board charger ensures a full charge if the battery runs out in less than six hours.

With a greater WLTP autonomy, the MG4 wins over the MG5 in terms of autonomy.

Price

The MG4 is available from 29,990 euros, not to mention the ecological bonus. It costs 33,990 euros for a version that offers at least 450 kilometers of autonomy and the high-end versions are displayed at 36,640 euros.

The MG5 is more expensive with a price starting at 32,990 euros, without eco bonus. For the versions with a larger battery and greater autonomy, the price of entry is 35,990 euros. Finally, adding the few options offered brings the price up to €38,140.

Which one to choose between the MG4 and the MG5?

Who can beat the MG4? As is so often the case when we put the small electric MG against the competition, it wins hands down. Even if you try to find an opponent within the same brand today, it is clear that the MG5 cannot compete.

In fact, the design clearly speaks for the MG4, as well as the handling, the performances or the acceleration. The space available on board is not a major advantage of the MG5, as the front seats do not offer great comfort.

There are undoubtedly a few use cases where the MG5 outperforms the MG4, thanks in particular to the larger trunk. But while MG’s electric estate car is interesting for those who want a big boot, consider that it’s not flat when the seats are down. In addition, its more imposing size makes it a less pleasant vehicle in urban areas, the MG4’s favorite playground.

Once again, the MG4 shows that it is an excellent electric car, with a value for money that is difficult to achieve. In 2023 it is undoubtedly one of the best electric cars on the market.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold / Flip 5: Most of the changes would focus on the screens – Frandroid

Prolific leaker Ice Universe has shared on his Twitter account a summary of his information about Samsung’s next foldable smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 5. Confirming much of the information mentioned over the last few months, this specialist also admits some more details possible future screens and dimensions of the two products.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Flip 5 Most of theLike the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the upcoming Z Flip 5 could feature new screen tech, according to a reliable leaker. // Source: SuperRoader via Sammobile

We know even more about what Samsung’s next folding smartphones could look like. In a tweet on Sunday March 19, 2023, the leaker ice universe publishes a roundup of rumors about the next models in the South Korean manufacturer’s Galaxy Z lineup: the Galaxy Z Fold 5 foldable book-size and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable clamshell-size.

Generally quite reliable, this specialist has also mentioned hypothetical properties never seen before for these two products. The crispest information is also the most laconic: these new smartphones would offer “new touchscreen technology” … without the leaker divulging more details.

A thinner and lighter Fold 5

Ice Universe therefore largely confirms rumors shared earlier. In particular, the fact that the two folding smartphones are said to integrate a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, as reported by South Korean media The Elec in July 2022. Likewise, the leaker echoes information put forward over the last few months about a possible new hinge with a “teardrop” design that would reduce the crease on the screen while offering an IPX8 seal.

Ice Universe has nevertheless detailed the next Z Fold 5 in an unprecedented way. If this internal design change had little impact on the external design, it would still change the dimensions of the smartphone a bit: “After folding, the gap becomes [entre les deux moitiés d’écran] disappears and thins out,” explains the leaker. This would make the phone about “0.2mm” thicker, from 15.8mm on the Z Fold 4 to “13mm” on this new model. Information contradicting the so-called “stolen” photo of a Z Fold 5 published by a South Korean blog last week.

As expected, this new hinge would also have an impact on the smartphone’s weight: the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could weigh “254 grams” according to Ice Universe, versus 263 grams for the Z Fold 4. As mentioned in March, the outer screen of the Z Fold 5 keep the same size: 6.2 inches. It is therefore expected to feature the same fairly close ratio as its predecessor.

A Flip 5 with a large square external screen

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 hasn’t been spared from unpublished rumors either. In addition to information on its next chip and hinge, the leaker also gave the exact size that the new external screen of Samsung’s next foldable clamshell smartphone could be, today 1.9 inches. In recent months, rumors have multiplied about an imminent restyling of this small plate dedicated to the use of the smartphone’s functions even when folded.

1679332307 965 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Flip 5 Most of theSource: SuperRoader via Sammobile

Ice Universe itself had argued that this sub-screen would be larger than that of the Oppo Find N2 Flip (3.2 inches). The leaker doesn’t contradict himself: According to his latest tweet, the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s external panel would grow to 3.4 inches… and would be “almost square”! In another tweet on Monday, Jan. ice universe also states that this new screen would have a “1:1.038” ratio.

Finally, those rumors end in tatters by reminiscent of the Z Flip 5’s inner screen, which Ice Universe says could still have “thinner” edges than its predecessor.

Unpublished but inaccurate images

Information, including 3D renderings in images and videos, of what this product could look like was released by the leaker on Saturday March 18th Super Roader on twitter. According to this, the smartphone would even have a tiny third screen on the outside to display the time and date, although these rather inaccurate details should be treated with caution.

However, the rumors shared in recent months seem to be heading in the same direction, that of a completely redesigned external screen. The rumors should be confirmed or debunked as we get closer to the launch of these two smartphones, both expected in early August 2023.

Android 14 will make these 19 Samsung devices almost obsolete

Android 14 will make these 19 Samsung devices (almost) obsolete – François Charron

Which Samsung phones and tablets cannot receive the Android 14 and One UI 6 update? We know a little more about the 19 devices that are being pushed almost into obsolescence for lack of access to security updates. Luckily, there is a way to extend the lifespan of these Samsung products.

The cycle of major system updates always makes people dissatisfied while some devices lag behind and cannot take advantage of the new features offered.

This is true on the Apple side with iOS, but also on the Google side with Android and, by the way, all cell phone manufacturers such as Samsung and its One UI updates.

While Android 14’s new features are expected in fall 2023, Samsung will also offer its One UI 6 update, which will be based on Android 14.

Only not all devices will be able to benefit from it…

Samsung devices that cannot have Android 14

The update cycle is a bit tricky to track if you own a Samsung phone or tablet as it all depends on your model.

Samsung is a good student when it comes to its update and system offerings… but especially when it comes to its high-end devices.

Before 2020, Samsung only offered two years of support for their devices, but since then they have offered three for their mid-range models and up to 4 years for the high-end models.

Still, we now know which phones and tablets will be limited to Android 13 and Samsung’s One UI 5. These will therefore not be able to take advantage of Android 14 and One UI 6. These are the models:

  • Galaxy S10 Lite
  • Galaxy S20FE
  • Galaxy S20
  • Galaxy S20+
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra
  • Galaxy Note 10 Lite
  • Galaxy Note 20
  • Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
  • Galaxy Z Flip
  • Galaxy Z Fold 2
  • Galaxy A22
  • Galaxy A32
  • Galaxy A51
  • Galaxy A71
  • Galaxy Tab A8
  • Galaxy Tab A7 Lite
  • Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
  • Galaxy Tab S7
  • Galaxy Tab S7+

For models below the above, we assume that they too will not be able to receive the update.

Missing security updates

It gets even more complex with security updates. Those that allow to close the bugs that endanger our Samsung devices.

It is that the South Korean giant has different cycles depending on the type of model we have. Newer models get updates quarterly, older ones semi-annually, and even older ones get no updates at all.

Some of the above models will no longer have access to security updates and some will therefore only have 2 updates per year. That means our device is at risk 6 months a year!

Some will scream planned obsolescence, but not getting another major Android and One UI update doesn’t mean our device will be inoperable overnight.

The risk lies at the level of lack of security updates, but fortunately we can extend the life of our Samsung device by having a protection solution.

Android antivirus programs continue to be updated in the face of new threats, protecting our devices that no longer receive a security patch.

This saves us about twenty dollars a year from buying a new device that continues to receive security updates.

These Samsung and Pixel devices are at risk of being hacked through our phone number – François Charron

Google warns owners of devices with Exynos modems built into Samsung, Vivo and Pixel phones. Project Zero, its dedicated cybersecurity lab, has reported 18 zero-day vulnerabilities. Four of them can allow a hacker to take control of our device simply by using our phone number.

Indeed, we learn this in a blog post by Tim Willis, leader of the Project Zero team at Google.

The latter explains that his team saw no fewer than 18 zero-day errors in Exynos modems made by Samsung.

As a reminder, a zero-day bug is a bug that has never been identified before.

The risks of these mistakes

Four of these vulnerabilities put devices equipped with Exynos modems at high risk. They are codenamed CVE-2023-24033.

Tim Willis basically explains that they can allow a hacker to take control of our device with amazing ease.

Project Zero testing confirms that these four vulnerabilities allow an attacker to remotely compromise a baseband-level phone without user interaction, and the attacker only needs to know the victim’s phone number. We believe that experienced attackers with limited additional R&D would be able to quickly create a working exploit to silently and remotely compromise affected devices.

Samsung and Pixel devices affected

Project Zero’s blog post lists the devices affected by these Exynos modem bugs:

  • Vivo S16
  • Vivo S15
  • Vivo S6
  • VivoX70
  • VivoX60
  • vivo X30
  • Pixel6
  • Pixel 6 Pro
  • Pixel 7 Pro
  • Pixel 7 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy S22
  • Samsung Galaxy M33
  • Samsung Galaxy M13
  • Samsung Galaxy M12
  • Samsung Galaxy A71
  • Samsung Galaxy A53
  • Samsung Galaxy A33
  • Samsung Galaxy A21s
  • Samsung Galaxy A13
  • Samsung Galaxy A12
  • Samsung Galaxy A04
  • Vehicles with the Exynos Auto T5123 chip

How to fix these vulnerabilities

Google has started rolling out security patches, especially for Pixel device owners. In their case, to fix the risks, it is enough to install the March 2023 update via the settings in the tab: System.

With Samsung and Vivo devices, it’s up to these companies to offer their own security patch, and Google can’t say exactly when they will.

Nevertheless, a quick reaction from these two manufacturers can be expected.

In anticipation of the update, Google is recommending that Samsung and Vivo device owners turn off Wi-Fi calling and Voice-over-LTE (VolTE) calling through their device settings. For this we have to:

  • Open the app: Ideas
  • Go to the tab: network and internet (or similar wording)
  • To continue pressing: SIM cards
  • Deactivate WiFi calling And volte
  • Finally, if you click on the malicious link anyway, it goes without saying that having an antivirus program will drastically reduce your chances of falling into the trap. This will be able to identify and block the threat even before it takes root on our computer.

Pi, a mathematical constant that has fascinated for thousands of years – National Geographic France

March 14th was the day of π (Pi), one of the most famous mathematical constants in the world.

Pi is the constant ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. This constant applies to all circles, regardless of their size: so the ratio of pi can be applied to both the rim of a can and the equator of a planet.

According to Ron Hipschman of the Museum Exploratorium in San Francisco, this rather simple description hides some rather intriguing properties. In 1988, museum staff held the first Pi Day celebration by eating cake (referring to the word cake, which means cake in English), and have continued the tradition every year since.

“Pi is interesting because it is infinite [et que sa séquence] never repeated,” says Hipschman. This is probably one of the reasons why it captivates so many people, he adds.

    A BRIEF HISTORY OF PI

We’ve known Pi for thousands of years; it is even in the Bible. This fascination is cross-cultural. Peoples like the Babylonians, ancient Greeks and Chinese tried to calculate more and more accurate versions of this value.

The famous mathematician Archimedes tried in 250 BC. to calculate the exact value of pi. He did this using two 96-sided polygons, one drawn inside a circle and the other outside. He believed that the value of pi was between the lengths of each polygon’s perimeter. This is the first theoretical calculation of pi, but also the most accurate of its time.

Over time, other people have managed to calculate the value of pi with greater accuracy. However, as computers developed, the hunt for decimals intensified. In 1949, two American mathematicians got 1,120 decimal places with a simple office calculator. To date, according to Hipschman, we have discovered 13.3 trillion digits of pi.

    IP TAG

Why March 14? The celebration originated in the United States, where the date is written in the abbreviated form “3/14”, reminiscent of the first digits of Pi: “3.14”.

Enthusiasts have many ways to celebrate this unique number. While some compose haikus and songs in his honor, others decide to memorize and recite as many decimal places as possible: the current record holder has reached 70,030 decimal places.

Big names in American higher education are also celebrating this special day in their own way. For example, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) publishes its admissions decisions every March 14th.

Other lovers dedicate themselves to the preparation (and tasting) of pies, a tradition that has become a symbol and has spread throughout the world.

“We all love celebrations, especially when there’s cake to share,” Hipschman jokes.
