Tesla’s NACS enjoys a domino effect as EV charging companies adopt the standard

Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS)

Tesla’s connector, now known as North American Charging Standards (NACS), lives up to its name as GM’s announcement triggers the domino effect with EV charging companies now adopting the standard.

When GM CEO Mary Barra and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced their collaboration for General Motors to integrate NACS as a plug into its future electric vehicles, they were essentially declaring that the plug is now the new standard in North America.

They have a good case for it, considering it’s already the most popular connector given Tesla’s large fleet, and now that Ford and GM are on board it’s going to be hard to stop.

We anticipate that a domino effect will occur and that all other automakers and charging station companies operating in North America will announce that they will be adopting NACS.

It’s already started with Flo, a Quebec-based EV charging company with over 90,000 chargers, announcing it will offer NACS at its charging stations and supports “broader use” of the standard.

Nathan Yang, FLO’s Chief Product Officer, commented on the announcement:

FLO welcomes initiatives to standardize charging hardware in North America because we believe it will help eliminate confusion for EV drivers. Ultimately, the increasing acceptance of the NACS standard is related to both its widespread use by EV drivers and the reliability of stations currently offering NACS. FLO is the industry leader in reliability, boasting over 98% uptime. With our goal of providing users with the best EV charging experience, we are committed to supporting the technologies and standards that our drivers want to use.

EVgo had announced that it would also equip its charging stations with NACS connections even before Tesla opened up the standard.

Now we assume that other charging station companies are already making similar announcements today and more will follow in the coming weeks.

The dominoes fall.
