The character brute was featured in the 1932 popeye comics and cartoons created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Also nicknamed “Bluto the Terrible”, he is described as a muscular, bearded, and vicious bully.

As the story progresses, Brutus becomes the enemy of the protagonist, who always tries to conquer Olívia Palito with brute force and tricks. Popeye’s archrival has a distinct, husky, and deep voice, and is very bearlike in his acting.

His appearance also resembles a well known villain of the time present in the movie “The Big Trail” named Red Flack. Like the sailor, he is in love with Olivia and always finds a way to kidnap her.

Popeye is only able to clash with the villain thanks to his superpower, which he acquired with the help of spinach. Because of this, he is portrayed as weaker than the protagonist in some episodes, leading his plans to conquer Palito to the worst.

On a few occasions, Brutus attempts to sabotage Popeye even before confronting him, aiming at his cans of spinach to weaken him and thus gain an advantage during the fight.
