The Block: Scott Cam demands answers after ‘freaky’ auction day result

Block moderator Scott Cam demands answers after auction day carnage was seen selling two ‘identical’ homes for a $1.5million difference: ‘We were all flabbergasted’

Block moderator Scott Cam has hinted there could be an investigation into what happened on auction day after two “identical” homes sold at wildly different prices.

All five houses went under the hammer in Gisborne on Saturday: one inexplicably sold for a blockbuster $1.6 million, another fetched just under $170,000, a third barely hit its reserve, and two houses were handed over without sale.

These unusual results left the cast and crew “stunned,” and Cam told radio show Fitzy & Wippa on Monday that he’s still looking for answers.

When asked why there was such a discrepancy in selling prices, Cam said, “I don’t know. That’s what I said at the Closer last night when we said goodbye to the show.

“I said, ‘If someone can explain what happened to me, I’d love to hear it.’ And that’s true. Everyone, the crew, the cameraman, the producers, everyone was amazed.”

“One joint is $5.6 million and the next joint is $4.1 million and they’re practically identical,” he added, referring to Omar and Oz’s winning property and the house on the third Place by Tom and Sarah-Jane, who won just $20,000.

Cam praised Tom and Sarah-Jane’s kind reaction to the bad news, saying: “They were stoic, they were indeed incredible, and they weren’t angry.

“They just said, ‘It is what it is.’ You know what Sarah-Jane said to me: “We’ll just pay off our mortgage like everyone else.”

Attorney for the block buyers, Frank Valentic of Melbourne-based Advantage Property Consulting, also commented on the odd auction outcome.

‘[It] was an out-of-the-box result. I find [Adrian Portelli, one of the bidders on Omar and Oz’s home] was also a friend of the owners,” he told Chron Australia.

“It was a bit of a crazy result.

“He obviously had the money to buy it, but he also pushed Danny [Wallis, the winning bidder] far in excess of what those properties were worth.’
