The bullet from the gun that killed John Lennon is being auctioned in England

A bullet from the gun that killed John Lennon in 1980 will be auctioned in England next Thursday (February 29). The ammunition was a gift from the New York Police Department (NYPD) to Officer Brian Taylor.

The bullet was not the ammunition that killed John Lennon, but came from the same gun that hit the singer. Brian Taylor obtained the item after visiting the New York Police Department and receiving permission to fire the gun that Mark Chapman used to murder John Lennon.

The item was kept by the officer until his last days of life and was added to the list of products to be auctioned after the officer's death. According to the BBC, auction house Anderson & Garland conducted extensive research and concluded that the bullet was real and was fired from the gun that killed John Lennon.

In an interview, the auction house's director said he hoped the sale would attract a legion of collectors of Beatlesrelated products, especially since it was a unique and unusual lot. “There is an enthusiastic Beatles fan base and a market for just about anything by the group. But it’s very rare to get something so unusual and unique.”

Documentary reveals John Lennon's last words

John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980. But only now, in December 2023, in the documentary In Lennon: Murder Without a Trial, the concierge of the Dakota building where the Beatles star was murdered spoke about this tragedy for the first time.

Jay Hastings was working at the front desk of the building, heard the singer's last words and fell to the ground in front of him. “He ran past me and said, 'I've been shot.' Blood flowed from his mouth. He fell to the ground,” he explained.

Hastings even remembered Yoko begging for an ambulance. “I turned him onto his back, took off his glasses and put them on the table. Yoko was screaming, 'Call an ambulance, call an ambulance, call an ambulance,'” he said.

Taxi driver Richard Peterson, who witnessed the crime, also reported in the documentary. “Lennon came in and this boy said, 'John Lennon.' He was a big guy. I looked at him through the windshield of my taxi. Suddenly he fired. “This guy just shot John Lennon,” he added.
