Brazil saw hours of tension this Sunday as thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded the Planalto Palace, Congress and the Supreme Court.
Many likened what happened to the attack on the Capitol in the United States when protesters supporting Donald Trump burst into Legislative Headquarters on January 6, 2021, before Joe Biden’s victory in the election there was confirmed.

To understand this episode and to contextualize what is happening, a good option is to watch the new documentary “6th January‘ which premiered days ago in HBO Max.
Produced and directed by brothers Jules and Gédeon Naudet, the documentary reviews the minute-long attack by supporters protesting the results of the presidential election, which denied the republican tycoon reelection.

The film recaps Trump’s speeches after the election loss and just before the country’s two chambers of Congress met on January 6, 2021 to confirm the victory of his opponent, Democrat Joe Biden.
Those speeches incited his supporters to attack the Capitol in Washington DC, according to a special congressional commission’s investigation. That’s why last month they demanded that the former president be charged with incitement to revolt, obstruction of an official process, conspiracy to defraud the government and false testimony.

With unreleased testimonies from those present and images of the crowds inside and outside Parliament House, the documentary aims to detail the invasion, which lasted into the early hours of January 7th.
The Naudets are also responsible for the documentaries “9/11”; The Presidents’ Gatekeepers and Notre-Dame: Our Lady of Paris.
