247 Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, called on Tuesday (24) for a comprehensive ceasefire between Palestine and Israel, attributing the cause of the current conflict to the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, the agency said Xinhua.

“A ceasefire must be reached immediately. This is the call of SecretaryGeneral (Antonio) Guterres,” and this is the call of the international community, the envoy said during the UN Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.

“Faced with strong demands from the international community, the Council must use clear and unambiguous language to call for an immediate ceasefire,” he said.

Zhang noted that Gaza has been completely without electricity for 15 consecutive days, water and fuel supplies have been disrupted and basic food and medicine are soon running out.

“The Council must demand in the clearest terms possible that the occupying power immediately lifts the total siege of Gaza, restores supplies of water, electricity and fuel and ends the collective punishment of the people of Gaza,” the envoy said.

CONTINUED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

“We urge Israel to create conditions conducive to the normal operation of the Rafah crossing, stop airstrikes on surrounding areas and ensure an unhindered aid channel. China has provided emergency humanitarian assistance through the Palestinian Authority and United Nations agencies. and will continue to provide material assistance according to the needs of the people of Gaza.”

On the humanitarian issue, Zhang said the civilian casualties of the recent conflict were shocking and “life and conscience seem so pale in the face of frequent indiscriminate attacks.”

“The Council must resolutely uphold the rule of international law, unequivocally condemn all violence and attacks against civilians and speak out unequivocally against any violation of international law. China calls for diplomatic efforts for the immediate release of hostages,” he said.

Zhang stressed that the root cause of the conflict lies in the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, the long disregard for the Palestinian people’s right to state independence and the lack of effective protection of their fundamental rights.

“The fundamental approach to resolving the PalestinianIsraeli conflict is the implementation of the twostate solution and the realization of peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel,” he said.

Zhang said China has worked tirelessly to promote the cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace.

“We maintain close communication with the parties involved and play a responsible and constructive role in bringing about a ceasefire, protecting civilians and preventing a major humanitarian disaster. China has no vested interest in the Palestine issue. Any initiative that contributes to peace will do so.” “We will have China’s firm support,” he said.

“Any effort that facilitates PalestinianIsraeli reconciliation will be vigorously pursued by China,” he said.
