The EU extends the scope of sanctions against Russian businessmen and families

The bloc of European countries tightened punitive policies against Moscow and will target a wider range of Russian businessmen and their relatives.

The European Union The categories of Russians against whom sanctions can be imposed have been expanded. It included a broader group of business people and their families, as the bloc is trying to do tighten sanctions against Moscow.

The new criteria for EU sanctions apply from On June 5th, the list of people who can register will be expanded “Leading businessmen operating in Russia and their immediate families” or other people who benefit from it.

Now, according to the new text, they are also at risk, the ““Entrepreneurs engaged in sectors of the economy that are a significant source of income for Russia”.and not just the “leading” business people operating in these markets.

How many Russian citizens and organizations has the European Union sanctioned?

The EU has almost sanctioned 1,500 people and 207 organizations since Russia’s attacks on Ukraine, beginning with the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and followed by the invasion of Ukraine in February last year. However, some EU countries have expressed concerns that the sanctions are not effective enough and would allow the sanctions to circumvent asset freezes by family members or others.

The EU updates its sanctions list every six monthsmeaning the new criteria could be applied in the next round in September.
