The SP City Hall expresses its opposition to the naming of Oficina Street in honor of Zé Celso

The city of São Paulo expressed its opposition to the bill that proposes to rename the street in Bixiga, where the Teatro Oficina is located, to Jaceguai Zé Celso. The aim of the initiative is to pay homage to the playwright José Celso Martinez Corrêa, who died this year at the age of 86.

The opinion was issued by the Ministries of Culture and Urban Planning and Licensing at the request of the Commission on Constitution, Justice and Legislation (CCJLP) of the São Paulo City Council.

The statement sent by the Urban Planning Department states that the inclusion of the name of the director “constitutes a change of name that is not in accordance with the permissible hypotheses of change provided for in the sections of Article 5 of Law No. 14.454/07”. .

The above legislation deals with changes to roads in the capital.

The article in question states that “the naming of streets and public spaces with a name other than that which, although not the subject of a decision by a competent authority, has already been traditionally established and integrated into the culture of the city, is prohibited. “

The Secretariat headed by Aline Torres used the same justification. “Due to his age, historical facts and geographical location, changing the name according to the abovementioned standard is prohibited,” the statement said.

It continues: “We assume that any addition to the current name constitutes a change and that the proposed solution adding the honoree’s name to an already existing official name sets a harmful precedent for the city, as such approval could promote the application.” this logic applied to all of its most central or visible streets.

“Considering the above and taking into account the current legislation, we therefore consider that we do not favor the approval of this proposal,” concludes the argumentation of the Ministry of Culture.

Justifying the bill proposed by Councilor Jussara Basso (PSOL), the parliamentarian states that the work of Zé Celso is “nationally and internationally recognized and of immeasurable importance”.

“Teatro Oficina is a group born in São Paulo, whose headquarters have been located on Rua Jaceguai since 1961 and are part of the city and culture of São Paulo. In this sense, the change of name of the street is significant the history of the city and this great genius of Brazilian theater”.

Zé Celso died after a fire broke out in his apartment in Paraíso.

The artist was a member of the founding group of the Teatro Oficina also consisting of Renato Borghi, Fauzi Arap, Etty Fraser, Amir Haddad and Ronaldo Daniel which would become a symbol of Brazilian theater.

Over time, Oficina developed into a center for the study of Brazilian dramaturgy. Actors such as Bete Coelho, Leona Cavalli and Esther Góes were trained in the theater. Augusto Boal, Fernanda Montenegro, Marieta Severo and Zezé Motta also came through there.
