The tough love story of Federica Quijano and her autistic son: "They threw it in the trash"

Federica Quijano, a member of the Kabah group, is currently recovering after suffering an injury caused by a blow from her son Sebastián, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three.

The singer revealed on her Instagram Stories on Jan. 11 that the teen “became very, very aggressive” and “hit her head with his arm.”

After going to the hospital, doctors discovered she had “tendonitis” in that limb, so they put her in a splint and sent her “medication” to help her heal.

Over the years, Quijano has been honest about the challenge of being Sebastián's mother due to the disorder that changes his behavior.

Federica Quijano's son was abandoned as a baby

In an interview with Gustavo Adolfo Infante in 2021 for his show “The Minute That Changed My Destiny,” Federica Quijano shared that she decided to adopt a child because she knew she couldn't have it on her own.

First, she took little María into her care and when she was two and a half years old, she began the process of becoming Sebastián's legal mother.

“They threw it in the trash and it stayed there for two or three days. “They found him with pneumonia, a runny nose, decalcified and bitten by animals,” he said of what happened to the baby.

The baby officially became the star's offspring at one year and five months of life, a stage at which he displayed normal behavior.

“He was born a completely normal, functioning child. “Obviously he was very scared when the lights were turned off because they put him to sleep with the lights and cameras on, they never took him into the garden,” he said.

“You know these flaws (from when) he was in the shelter, but he sang, he danced, he played with his sister, he defended her,” he added.

Sebastian was diagnosed with autism

In January 2021, she told “Ventaneando” that “Tian,” as she affectionately calls him, had turned three and a half years old and “from one day to the next” she “lost him.”

“He was in a diaper again, he started hitting himself, he started pawing,” she recalled of his behavior.

Federica took the minor to doctors who falsely told him he had a “progressive degenerative disease and that he was dying,” until they discovered he was actually autistic.

Federica Quijano took her son Sebastián to the hospital

In her conversation with Adolfo Infante, Federica Quijano spoke about the time when she decided to confine Sebastián to a medical facility for his own good.

“When I was 9 years old I had to admit him to a psychiatric hospital, which for me… I fell into complete depression there,” he explained.

“He stayed there for a while because he started hurting himself and there was no way to control it. I grabbed him and said to him: 'My love, don't hit yourself. 'What is happening to you?'. As a mother, you’re not prepared for that,” she added.

The interpreter of “The Street of the Mermaids” then admitted that accepting her son's condition “was, was and always will be the greatest pain you can have as a mother.”

In March 2021, she assured Las Estrellas that she had “given up” several times: “I threw in the towel many times, I fell and got back up, I did therapy.”

“I'm on medication, and also I still have hormonal issues, so it's all coming together, but I can't afford to stay down because I have an obligation to my children,” she said.

Federica Quijano confessed her current fear of Sebastián

After the accident in which “Tian” injured her, Federica Quijano uploaded a video to Instagram in which she reflected in front of the camera.

Among other things, she spoke about “the pain” she feels “seeing her son so far away” and expressed her fear:

“There will continue to be complicated days like this. The only thing that scares me more is that he keeps growing, getting stronger, and I get older. “I’m afraid of the day when I can’t handle him anymore.”
