"The Voice": Talent At The Rendezvous

After explosive renditions of their respective greats, which ended atop a Montreal building, the “La Voix” coaches took their places on Sunday night to welcome the first candidates for this new season’s Auditions at the Blind.

If multiple contestants managed to charm the coaches, Montreal native Steffy Beyong, 23, turned them completely upside down as Corneille waited just seconds to press her button. “I didn’t know that my voice could have such an effect on people,” the young woman explained in an interview. I had sung in public before, but I didn’t have confidence. I didn’t think I could convey so many emotions.”

His presence at “La Voix” is initially due to a combination of circumstances that were initially difficult to live with.

“I had vital signs urging me to go to the auditions, I couldn’t have done it on my own. I got fired from my job and my “boss” told me to sign up for “La Voix”. I found myself in a situation where I had nothing left to lose. I am still in touch with my ex “boss” and she is proud of me. She says she released a butterfly with the gesture. But it was still a blow back then.

A living voice

Steffy Beyong’s warm and deep voice vibrates to the rhythm of the emotions she conveys. “I knew I could sing around the age of 15 when I was going through a really, really difficult time. I felt this gift and started expressing my feelings through music. It became pain. You can feel it in my voice that there are many emotions, life has taught me that.”

She confides in the same breath that singing is a way for her to free herself from this difficult and complicated past. “I’m very humble about my feelings, but when I sing it’s a way of speaking to my heart, a kind of therapy. It doesn’t hurt me, it relieves me.”

In addition to her beautiful voice, the young woman of 23 has a self-confidence and a crazy charisma, which she calls the bathroom syndrome. “Singing alone at home helps to practice the voice, but also everything else, be it the gait, the posture, the presence… All those things that I usually do in my bedroom bathroom, I can now do on stage Putting it into practice, but I still have a lot to develop.”

After difficult years and a suicide attempt last year, Steffy Beyong sees hope in her life again. “It’s going much better, ‘La Voix’ gives me more confidence. But I’ve come a long way.”

Touched by Mario Pelchat’s comments, she decided to join his team. “He is also a vocal singer and I tell myself that with his years of experience and wisdom he can help me to develop further. I would like to be able to find out more about myself. I think he’ll be able to teach me how to deal with my emotions, how to deal with them… He’ll help me make progress.

Catherine Bessette, 29, Mercier

During her youth, Catherine Bessette impersonated the character of Anouchka de la Pétarade, whose songs were meant to instill good values in children. She then sang on cruise ships with her then-lover Guillaume Lafond (whom we spotted on Star Académie in 2020).

“What I love most in the world is singing,” explains the mother of two young children. I’m ready to start my career. Working with coaches, being with colleagues who love music can only do me good. I want to keep singing, collaborating with other singers and reaching as many people as possible.”

The four chairs revolved around his rendition of “Old My Hand,” the song from the movie Top Gun, but it’s Marc Dupré who has him on his team now. “I’ve followed him through the past few seasons and I know how he takes care of his singers. I like his style of music, he’s friendly and he has a lot of baggage to share. I want to work with him, learn as much as possible from his experience. He is really present and invested in the process. We look very alike.”
