Based on the literary trilogy Grisha and the literary duology Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, the series Shadow and Bone: the Grisha Saga was released on Netflix in April 2021. With its very specific lexicon, this fiction had the right to a second season. But after months of waiting, subscribers to the red-logo streaming platform learned that Shadow and Bone would not be returning for a third season… A rather surprising announcement since the fantasy series is one of the most watched of 2023. Between January and June, it ranked as the 32nd most-watched show on Netflix.

The Shadow and Bone series renewed as a spin-off?

While the renewal of “Shadow and Bone” will not happen, Eric Heisserer, the showrunner of the series, recently revealed to the website Collider that he had offered Netflix three seasons and not two. “I have a three-year plan or a three-season plan that I presented to Netflix from the beginning”, he hinted before revealing to EW that he was working on a spin-off of the series based on the characters from the novel Six of Crows. “One of the reasons I had the privilege of working with Daegan Fryklind as co-showrunner of season two is because I was busy working with other writers on Six of Crows. We are ready to start our own story. The scripts for all eight episodes are phenomenal and I am really proud of my team,” he said.

Leigh Bardugo reacts to Shadow and Bone cancellation

When Leigh Bardugo found out about Shadow and Bone's cancellation, he reacted on social media. “The news hurt me very much. I am heartbroken and deeply disappointed, but I also try to be grateful. […] Most authors never get the chance to have their work adapted. Many of those who do end up regretting it. “I’m one of the few people who can watch an adaptation with pride and joy,” she said. Fans can still find out what happens in this third season of “Shadow and Bone” thanks to the books from which the series would be adapted.
