ANALYSIS – The Ukraine crisis is blowing a Cold War wind across the world by crystallizing an ideological opposition between two camps.
Viewed from Europe or Washington, the dominant impression is that the whole world has risen up against Putin and his war in Ukraine. This impression is reinforced by the unanimous condemnation of the West and its political, economic and military efforts to help Ukraine resist. But that is a Western perception that acts like a distorting mirror of reality.
Since the war began, one part of the world has openly supported Vladimir Putin’s regime, while another has failed to condemn it, resorting to indifference or embarrassment. And two months after the start of the offensive, the war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine have not changed the position of these countries.
The fault lines
On March 2, the UN resolution condemning Ukraine’s aggression was adopted by 141 states. But it was rejected by five countries, Russia of course, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea. 35 countries abstained. Among them most…
