Three short films from Quebec still in the running for the Oscars – Radio-Canada.ca

Three short films from Quebec are part of the shortlist for the Oscars next March: “Invincible” by Vincent René-Lortie, “Chat mort” by Danick Audet and Annie-Claude Caron and “Oasis” by Justine Martin.

“Invincible” won the Iris Prize for the best Quebec short fiction film at the Gala Québec Cinéma 10 days ago. In February he won the Special Jury Prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival and in March the Jury Prize at the Saguenay International Short Film Festival.

Inspired by a true story, the 30-minute film looks back on the last 48 hours in the life of Marc-Antoine Bernier, a 14-year-old boy who is confronted with his need for freedom.

It's one of 15 films competing in the best short fiction category, just like “Dead Cat,” which won best short fiction at the Tribeca festival in New York in June.

The two Quebec productions face renowned filmmakers in their category: Pedro Almodovar and his Western Strange Way of Living with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and Wes Anderson and The Marvelous Story of Henry Sugar with Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Kingsley.

The film “Oasis” by Quebecer Justine Martin is one of the 15 productions competing for the Oscar for best documentary short film. The 14-minute film tells the story of twins Raphaël and Rémi Cormier on the verge of puberty, whose relationship deteriorates because one of them, suffering from a disability, remains a prisoner of childhood.

The short film also caught the attention of The New York Times, which is offering it for free in the Op-Docs section of its website, dedicated to short films by independent filmmakers.

However, Canada is excluded from the Oscar race for best foreign film because Montrealer Zaynê Akyol's documentary “Rojek” was not included in the shortlist of 15 films.

Barbie And Oppenheimer well represented

In total, the Academy of Oscars announced the shortlists in 10 categories on Thursday, including original songs and music, hairstyling, makeup, visual effects and sound.

Unsurprisingly, Greta Gerwig's Barbie, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Martin Scorsese's The American Note are preselected in many categories, particularly in terms of music and sound. Remember, Barbie and Oppenheimer are the big favorites for the Golden Globes, with nine and eight nominations, respectively.

Shortlists are largely determined by members in their respective categories, although details vary: some have selection committees, others have minimum viewership requirements.

Final nominations in all categories will be announced on January 23rd. The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on March 10 and will be broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The gala begins an hour earlier than usual, at 7 p.m.
