Tiger Woods raises Masters return hopes with legend of ‘playing practice round at Augusta National’

Is Tiger on the hunt for Augusta again? Golf legend Woods is raising hopes for a sensational and surprise Masters return as the five-time winner plays a practice round on the course with his son after flying in from his Florida home

  • It is speculated that Tiger Woods will play in the first major of the season
  • It has emerged that Woods, 46, will have a practice round at Augusta National
  • The news has created excitement that the all-time greats will be at the Masters
  • His name is also still listed on the tournament’s website as an “active participant”.

Tiger Woods looks set to be on the verge of a sensational comeback at the Masters next week after showing up with his son Charlie for a practice round at Augusta National on Tuesday.

The 15-time major champion has not played a tour event since his near-fatal car accident in Los Angeles more than a year ago, which resulted in horrific injuries to his right leg.

He downplayed his chances of competing in Augusta last month, explaining that he only played a few holes while riding in a buggy. But Woods was spotted walking 18 holes a couple of times in Florida last week, and speculation about his return mounted as his name remained on the Masters website’s “active competitors” list.

He played an afternoon practice round on Tuesday which is clearly a late test of fitness. Augusta is a heavily hilly course, so it makes sense for Woods to see how his leg responds to playing shots from uneven lies and walking more than 7,500 yards.

There’s no deadline for Woods to commit to the Masters, meaning he could delay it for up to another week before making a final decision.

The last time Woods was seen in proper competition was the 2020 Masters when he was the defending champion after the most amazing of his five wins in 2019.

Now the golfing world will hold its breath and hope against all odds that we’ll see another Tiger miracle at the Masters.

However, he has tried to shake off expectations in recent weeks after revealing at the Genesis Open that he cannot run on a ‘wavy’ course.

Because of the layout at Augusta, there was little hope that Woods would make a memorable charge for a record-breaking sixth green jacket.

But excitement surrounding the iconic venue has reignited after it was confirmed that Woods’ Gulfstream landed in the same state.

His decision will not affect another player’s participation in the Masters as there are no reserves, so he could wait until the last minute to decide.

The legend is expected to attend the Champions Dinner on Tuesday before the showpiece and various publications have advised him to keep golfing busy.

He’s been in the same situation before, in 2016 and 2017.

Both times he struggled to recover from a back injury and withdrew from the Masters on the Friday before the tournament started.

Woods played in the unofficial PNC championship with his son Charlie in late 2021, and the 15-time major champion finished runner-up that week.

The former world No. 1 is currently ranked 917th in the official golf world rankings.
