In addition, the company presented details on due diligence related to electoral processes and how it will reduce the reach of synthetic media. In that sense, filters are not the target of TikTok’s action. In practice, they have taken new measures against deepfakes, i.e. images in which a person’s face is manipulated in a scene.

scenario

It is worth remembering that today TikTok is the main network used by young people and has been pressured by several countries such as the United States. The government there is threatening to ban its use. The argument is that the tool allows spying by the Chinese government.

In Brazil, TikTok is also facing some legal issues. A parent sued the platform for failing to comply with the Children and Adolescents Act (ECA) because TikTok displayed sensitive content to minors.

Along the same lines, Justice Departmentaffiliated Senacon ordered videos to be removed from the web by 2022.

Deadlines and Changes

The new rules apply from April 21. TikTok uses artificial intelligence and other mechanisms to identify minors trying to trick the app into using thirdparty data.

Likewise, the company says it has reduced the flow of inappropriate content, whether related to weight loss, eating disorders, selfharm, and even suicide. With the changes, this content profile will no longer be suggested in the For You tab for minors.

In addition, other content that exposes the body or contains sexualized poses of young people will also no longer appear in the recommended tab. Remember that other restrictions are already active. Such is the case with the ban on anyone under the age of 16 direct messaging and those under the age of 18 not being able to broadcast live.

synthetic media

Eventually, TikTok will also require videos modified by artificial intelligence to state “fake, unreal, or synthetic” in the caption or even hashtags. If the rule is not followed, the reach of the video decreases. Thus, the main goal of the platform is to avoid deepfakes by politicians. In addition, the company has been exploring ways to prevent the spread of fake news and hate speech during electoral processes, so the new guidelines should include details on paid political advertising.
