As on the plane, television now offers two classes: first class and economy class.
In Economy Class, the viewer sees everything, but has to invest time. When the series airs that they couldn’t watch on illico, Crave or tou.tv Extra, the richest have long since seen it on digital platforms. In plain language, there is now the television of the wealthy and that of the lower middle class. The poorest have to be content with television that they can watch with bunny ears. They are, so to speak, the homeless people of television!
During the concluding season, Radio-Canada, TVA and Noovo presented two dozen original Quebec series. Some, like Les mecs or Le bonheur, annoyed me with their vulgarity; I was very interested in others such as Fragments, Les Bracelets Rouges or Entre deux Sheets. None of them fascinated me enough that I didn’t miss a single episode.
MY FAVORITES
I found my favorites somewhere else than on traditional television. Especially on illico and crave. My first choice is Mégantic, directed by Alexis Durant-Brault from a script by Sylvain Guy. The directing of the actors is impeccable, the visuals are stunning, and the trick of showing the devastating explosion of the oil trucks from multiple characters’ points of view works beautifully. It was a risky bet. How risky was Episode 7, which was entirely dedicated to the train driver. This episode marks a change in tone and rhythm, an almost brutal break with the other episodes.
After Mégantic, it’s the night Laurent Gaudreault woke up that I remember best. This demanding series, which can also be seen on illico, is symbolic of Xavier Dolan’s work and his world. Since Dolan has been directing, he has decided to take a break from his film career. Hopefully it’s not a permanent break.
And then there’s Disobeir: Chantale Daigle’s Choice, which is featured on Crave. In this case, I keep neither the originality of the screenplay by Isabelle Pelletier and Daniel Thibault, because it is more traditional, nor the quality of the cast, although Éléonore Loiselle and Antoine Pilon have given good assurances, but the enormous importance of the subject, abortion is becoming increasingly fashionable Asked a question. At Mégantic, ALSO (Durand-Brault and Sophie Lorain) is the producer.
Long an entertainment that cost almost nothing, television is becoming increasingly expensive if you want to watch the series when they first air. However, this premium television reserved for digital platforms would not be possible without public funding.
ERIC GIRARD KNOWS HOW TO COUNT…
… But he can’t speak French. Last week, in all the interviews he gave after the budget was presented, the finance minister kept adding an ‘s’ to the word ‘thousand’ (1000). He does not therefore know that the word thousand is always invariable unless it is a measure of length. Another minister to be ‘shaken’ and returned to primary school!
