A British tourist has died on a family outing after trying to complete a 21-drink alcohol challenge.
Timothy Southern, 53, was on vacation with his sister, children and other family members in Saint Ann, Jamaica in May 2023, the National Post reported.
He drank beer and brandy that morning before joining two Canadian tourists. They tried to drink all 21 drinks on the pool bar menu by the end of the day, according to ITV News.
After twelve cocktails, the man decided to return to his room, where he was found unconscious by his family.
“He was lying on his back and choking,” a family member told the investigative team.
“I put him in the recovery position and yelled for an ambulance. It made a gurgling noise. As soon as I put him back, he threw up. I called his name for an answer, to no avail.
bad service
The man’s family was extremely critical of the hotel’s handling of the situation. According to her, the nurse never called the ambulance and said he still had a pulse. Nor would she have performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
“I looked at his face and I was convinced that he was already dead,” added a member of his family. I yelled at the nurse to do something. She only gave him chest compressions. The service was terrible.”
Emma Serrano, a Staffordshire coroner, said the cause of death was “acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption”.
Acute gastroenteritis is a common stomach infection or inflammation that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. It is usually due to the ingestion of medications, pathogens, and other diseases and syndromes.
It can also be triggered by excessive alcohol consumption, which was the case with Timothy Southern.
