After the big warning strike, traffic in Germany was back up and running on Tuesday morning. Airports are back up and running, trains, buses and subways are running again. Germany’s biggest warning strike in decades, which also had a huge impact on traffic in Austria on Monday, had partial effect the next day. Some flights were canceled and some long distance trains were cancelled.
According to Deutsche Bahn, train traffic resumed on Tuesday as planned. “In long-distance traffic, only a few trips are canceled in the early hours of the morning,” a spokesman for the group told the German Press Agency. Regional and S-Bahn traffic works without strike-related failures.
In rail freight, pre-strike transport management was said to ensure a “stable operational starting point”. Since Monday night, the first freight trains from the reserve at the marshalling yards have started again.
Deutsche Bahn had warned passengers that there could still be cancellations and delays in long-haul traffic on Tuesday. According to his information, regional and S-Bahn traffic gradually resumed in many regions on Monday night.
Airports, including Germany’s biggest airport in Frankfurt, also resumed operations on Tuesday. “It’s slowly getting fuller,” said a spokeswoman for operator Fraport. A total of 1,118 flight movements with around 157,000 passengers were planned in Frankfurt on Tuesday, including nearly 3,800 passengers who could not fly earlier due to the strike. About 40 flight cancellations were known as of Tuesday morning, partly due to the aftermath of the strike, according to the spokeswoman.
The consequences of the strike were also resolved in maritime transport. The pilot shifters in the port of Hamburg wanted to resume their work from 6am so that the pilots could board the ships again. The Kiel Canal is also to be reopened.
The Verdi and EVG unions largely halted bus, train and air traffic in Germany on Monday. With the big strike notice day, they wanted to increase the pressure on employers in the ongoing collective bargaining. The strike also had a huge impact on rail and air traffic in Austria. Verdi spoke of the biggest strike since 1992.
