Travel through time with the chimes

Almost a year ago, I locked myself alone in the dark to travel back in time. I gradually watched the videos of the TVE chimes from 1980 to 2022. It was an incredible trip that you can take without spending a single euro. Forty-two years and as many moments. Of the young people who greet the camera at Puerta del Sol in 1980, some will already be shadows, reminders of the living who lived on without them. Others will be retired. Some of you would not have been conceived yet.

In the first videos, the execution of the glockenspiel was sober and the soundtrack was professional. We were told about the coming Europe. The propaganda surrounding the dream of modernity was expressed through the chimeras of the Olympic Games and Expo 92. Perhaps it was this flaw in the 1990 Bells that caused the desire for opulence to turn into cheesiness and nonsense. Sequins, cutouts, bow ties and Bejaran capes. Fifteen years in which Ramon García told us that no matter how much things change, he and Jordi Hurtado will remain unchanged. The immense euphoria of the turn of the century and millennium. The year that Ramontxu defied the will of the people by not saying “Happy 2005,” which prevented us Spaniards from going out the window and shouting the unbeatable rhyme. What a picture the world has lost.

In addition to TV memories, other private memories are also awakened. Houses we can't return to. Friends who stopped being friends. Vows of love, fragile like wafers. Dispute over a hake or a word. At the end of the chime they will all evaporate. At the end of the trip, I assure you that you will be happy that there is still someone to spend New Year's Eve with. In the end, what isn't shared is worth it?
