Miami, June 25 (EFE). — Tropical Storm Cindy is gradually weakening in the mid-Atlantic as it moves northwest, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported this Sunday.

Cindy, the third tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is blowing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 km/h) today and is located about 430 miles (695 km) northeast of the Lesser Antilles.

Cindy, which poses no threat to coastal areas and formed from tropical depression number four in the open ocean on Thursday evening, is moving northwest at a speed of 21 miles per hour (33 km/h), although its direction is expected to decrease at speed in the next days.

Tropical storm force winds extend up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center and NHC forecasts the system will pass well to the northeast of the northernmost Leeward Islands.

NHC experts predict it will gradually weaken over the next 48 hours, becoming a mid-Atlantic depression by Tuesday.

After Arlene and Bret, Cindy is the third tropical storm to form in the current Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began June 1.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), at least 12 named storms will form in the Atlantic basin this year, with between 5 and 9 of them becoming hurricanes.

At least one of them could be a major hurricane, according to NOAA meteorologists, who are forecasting an, on average, “near-normal” hurricane season. EFE
