Former US President Donald Trump has warned of possible “death and destruction” if he is prosecuted hours after New York prosecutors investigating his secret payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels said they would not be intimidated.
Friday’s post on Trump’s social media site Truth was the latest in a series of verbal attacks on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg since last Saturday, when Trump incorrectly predicted he would be arrested three days later.
Trump falsely claims his 2020 defeat was the result of fraud a claim that inspired his supporters to launch a deadly attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 to prevent Congress from voting the election of Democrat Joe Biden, who beat Republican Trump by more than 7 million votes.
“What kind of person can another person, in this case a former President of the United States who has won more votes than any sitting President in history, and the front runner (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination, with a Charges charge crimes when it is common knowledge that NO crime was committed, and also knowledge that the potential death and destruction from such a false charge could be catastrophic for our country?” wrote Trump, who is seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Bragg’s office on Thursday denied its legitimacy to investigate his office in a letter to Republican congressional committee chairs, saying Trump “created a false expectation that he would be imprisoned” in a post published Saturday. The letter called the president’s request for notices, documents and testimony an “illegal encroachment on the sovereignty of New York.”
Stormy Daniels, an actress and adult film director whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, said she was paid for keeping quiet about a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels and described the payment as a “simple private transaction”. He has said he has committed no crime and claims the investigation is politically motivated.
The Manhattan grand jury investigating Trump is not expected to convene until next week.
