Turkey ratifies Sweden's membership in NATO

The Turkish parliament ratified Sweden's NATO membership this evening, ending 20 months of negotiations between Ankara and Stockholm.

The Swedish candidacy, which now only requires Hungary's green light, was accepted with an overwhelming majority.

Stockholm: “We are getting closer and closer to NATO membership”
Today we are one step closer to full membership in NATO. “It is positive that the Grand General Assembly of Turkey voted for Sweden to join the Atlantic Alliance.” This is what Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson writes in X.

Sweden: “No reason to negotiate NATO membership with Hungary”

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said he sees no reason to negotiate with Hungary over its NATO membership, just hours after receiving an invitation from Budapest to “discuss” joining the alliance.

“At the Madrid summit last year, Hungary granted Sweden guest status” with a view to joining NATO without reservations, Billström told reporters. “I therefore see no reason to negotiate today,” he added.
