A motorist accused of mowing down 8 cyclists near Barcelona was arrested by Catalan police on Sunday night.
The accident that killed two cyclists in Castellbisbal, northwest of Barcelona, on Sunday morning was voluntary, according to a survivor. When asked by the Catalan newspaper Vilaweb, he explained that the 41-year-old driver, who was arrested by the Catalan police on Sunday evening, “Changing lanes for no reason and accelerating”.
Two of the mowed cyclists died, one of them instantly, while three others were seriously injured and hospitalized in critical condition. The accident triggered strong emotions in Catalonia. So three days of mourning were ordered in the town where the cyclists lived.

“It’s an attack”
According to Pedro Cancio, president of the Rubí cycling club, the rider had one “evil intention”. The following cyclist fell sideways without serious injuries. From his position he could observe the behavior of the driver. Cancio insists it was no coincidence . “It wasn’t involuntary. The way things happened, it’s an attack.”
According to initial findings, the arrested man already had a well-sorted file. A traffic safety violation would have been reported in 2013. He is suspected of mowing down 8 cyclists and then fleeing the scene by abandoning his vehicle.
