At least two people died in a fire in the Juan XXIII nursing home in the Moncloa-Aravaca district in the early hours of this Sunday. Another person is in critical condition and has been taken to the hospital in La Paz, and 16 others are slightly intoxicated. The cause of the fire and the identity of the deceased are currently unknown.
The city police and state police were the first to arrive at the residence and began evicting the elderly. The fire department then arrived and managed to extinguish the flames in the room and ventilate the building.
Isabel Casado, Samur-PC watch chief, explained that the emergency services received a report of the fire in the residence at around 7:00 a.m. and that when they arrived, the evacuation of the residence had already been organized. “The balance is two women deceased and one in critical condition due to inhalation burns who was transferred to the hospital in La Paz.” Of the remaining residents, 33 in total, a classification has been made and we have four Transferred people in less serious condition due to inhalation,” he explained. In total there are 16 mildly poisoned people, in addition to the person who is in critical condition and the two deceased. According to Casado, Samur was coordinated at all times with the emergency services (SUMMA 112), as well as with the fire department and the police.
José Luis Castillo, head of the Madrid Fire Department, added that when they arrived they found police officers already carrying out evacuation operations and that they had located the fire in a room on the first floor of the residence. After the extinction, they helped evacuate as the second floor was “flooded with smoke” and they had to get all the residents there to safety.
The residence has been open since 1990. It can accommodate 39 people and has had public spaces agreed with the Community of Madrid since 2009.
