Jahmile Addae will have to replace his two cornerbacks next year Tyrique Stevenson and DJ Ivey Off to the NFL.
Miami was able to add much-needed depth and a potential starter to the former UCF transfer Vonste Brown when he announced his commitment to the hurricanes over the state of Florida on Monday.
In three years with the Knights, Brown played nearly 1,900 snaps while completing 55 percent of the goals thrown at him. In 116 passes thrown to him, receivers caught 64 for 836 yards on just four touchdowns. He finished his AAC career with three interceptions and 11 deflections.
An experienced plus-size body at 6-foot-2, 185-lbs, Brown has the potential to contend for a key role in Kevin Steele’s defense in 2022. He finished 2021 with a strong 84.0 coverage score, which was his best season of his career. He didn’t concede a touchdown all season while playing in a career-high 763 snaps.
Brown’s addition is also a big deal because his younger brother, Damariis a top Miami target in the Class of 2023. The nation’s No. 18 cornerback this cycle is likely to paper Wednesday, day one of the early signing period, and the Hurricanes have been on the front lines of that recruitment ever since new staff was employed.
Alabama and Florida State are considered Miami’s top two threats, but it’s really the Crimson Tide, which earned a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction earlier this month from director of recruitment Steve Wiltfong, who is Mario Cristobal’s biggest competitor.
While there’s no guarantee that the younger Brown will follow his older brother to Coral Gables, there’s no harm in having that connection, especially considering their father Selwyn is a national champion of the program.
