(ANSA) – LONDON, JUNE 29 – An opportunity for a meeting today between 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth and Scottish Independence First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, following Sturgeon’s resumption of the challenge of trying to gain a second post. The coincidence between the announcement and today’s in-person meeting was coincidental, in the wake of the elderly sovereign’s last-minute decision to make a now rare off-site trip to Edinburgh to continue the tradition of her week-long annual stay at her Scottish royal residence of Holyrood Palace. Elizabeth II received Sturgeon on a courtesy call at the Palace of Holyrood, but the conversation revealed not the slightest public reference to political matters. One video showed the monarch standing, for once not being forced to lean on the cane she has routinely used for any movement in recent months due to recently publicized “mobility issues”. The pro-referendum bis bill proposed yesterday by Sturgeon is subject to a first-instance judgment by the Supreme Court of London. But Boris Johnson’s central government, which has the last word on paper under current constitutional law, has already confirmed that it will not give its consent: given the current national and international context and the pre-emptive pledge made on both fronts in 2014, to consider the result of this consultation (55.3% no, 44.7% yes) as the answer of the generations.
