Ukraine: Russian missile attack leaves at least five dead

At least five people died and 40 were injured in a Russian missile attack on several regions of Ukraine, including the capital, today, Ukrainian authorities reported.

In a message published on the Telegram messaging platform, Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klimenko said that the deaths of three people had been confirmed in Kharkiv (northeast), where 30 were also injured.

“The inmates hit two residential buildings,” complained Igor Klimenko, who also mentioned that there were 30 injured in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city.

A multistory residential building was partially destroyed, trapping an as yet unknown number of people inside, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov said.

Klimenko also mentioned a death in Kiev, where two residential buildings and a private building were damaged. “As a result of the rocket attack, there are several fires in the capital,” he added.

“As a result of the rocket attack on Kiev, we have already registered the death of a woman and four injured,” wrote the head of the capital's military administration, Sergei Popko, also mentioning damage to several residential areas.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko also said on Telegram that nine people were injured, including a 13yearold boy, and several buildings were evacuated after an unexploded rocket was found in an apartment.

Another victim died in the city of Pavlograd in the Dnipropetrovsk region in the center of the country, while three people were injured in Bukhansky in the Kiev region, Igor Klimenko also noted.

The attack came hours after EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said he was confident there was a consensus to provide Ukraine with another five billion euros under the European Peace Support Mechanism.

This came after the EU failed in December to reach an agreement to revise the multiannual financial framework, which included a €50 billion package to support Ukraine between 2024 and 2027, due to the blockade by Hungary.

On Sunday, Denis Pushilin, leader of the selfproclaimed Donbass People's Republic which was annexed by Russia in September 2022 accused Ukrainian forces of causing the deaths of 25 people in an attack on a market in Donetsk.

The Ukrainian army denied responsibility, assured that forces in this front area did not resort to the type of weapons used in “combat operations” against the market and accused Moscow of “spreading disinformation.”

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, arguing that it was protecting proRussian separatist minorities in the east of the neighboring country, which has been independent since 1991.
