According to the UN nuclear regulatory agency, IAEA, about 2.5 tons of uranium disappeared in Libya. The natural uranium is no longer in the facilities where it was stored, according to a letter from the IAEA to the organization’s member states, which was made available to Portal on Wednesday. The factory in the country in civil war is no longer under state control.
During an inspection on Tuesday, IAEA inspectors found that 10 barrels containing about 2.5 tonnes of natural uranium in the form of uranium ore concentrate were missing, according to the letter from IAEA chief Rafael Grossi. Libya has not calmed down since the fall of ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Since 2014, the country has been torn between rival factions of the civil war in the east and west.
